The Crime Victim Compensation Commission (the Commission) presents, Advancing Practices in Mass Violence Response: Cultural Competency, Psychological First Aid (PFA), & Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR).
PURPOSE
Psychological First Aid (PFA) and Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR), in the aftermath of a mass violence incident (MVI), are best practices for disaster behavioral health response and recovery. Culture is also an important context for which people experience trauma such as an MVI, develop adaptive strategies, and process external aid and support, especially including behavioral health services.
Using the PFA and SPR models, participants will acknowledge culture as a critical component when responding to an MVI. Participants will also learn to approach different languages, values, attitudes, and beliefs, that differ across cultures, and to consider and respond effectively to these differences when responding to victims of crime in the aftermath of an MVI.
Participants will learn through practical applications, group discussions, and tabletop exercises targeted to the following topics:
- Cultural Competency & Awareness in the Aftermath of an MVI
- Psychological First Aid (PFA)
- Active Listening Skills
- Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR)
