Open Rivers Discussion & Paper
These questions are meant to be a starting point for the Open Rivers paper that the Tropical Rivers Lab will write on how we understand science/scientits's role in society. They are internal to our group and will not be shared outside the group in this format (the only thing that will be shared is the paper itself). This will not take more than an hour to fill out but how much of the hour it will take depends on the extent to which you answer the questions!

As you fill out the survey please think about what roles are and what responsibilities they entail. I've put in some examples in some of the questions to help guide, but you may interpret the question in different ways and that's okay too! Feel free to answer the questions in the abstract or with specific stories to illustrate your answer.

****IMPORTANT**** There may also be some questions that you get stuck on or it's taking too long to engage with or you might not feel like it's the best use of your time/relevant to your experience: You can totally skip those or write in "Will think about this more" and bring those further thoughts to our larger discussion-- this paper should reflect what we think is important about the topic of science, scientists, and society, and is not meant to be an exhaustive study or anything like that.

Thanks everyone <3

Why did you join the Tropical Rivers Lab? (You may also not be "officially" part of the lab because you have a different advisor, or because you are no longer at FIU, or whatever reason, but consider this particular activity as part of the construction of the lab, which you are part of by participating :) )
How would you describe what you do for work and/or in the lab?
How do you relate to rivers? Does this relationship with rivers influence your role/work in the lab?
How do you think the majority of people relate to rivers? (Specify which context you're thinking of: globally? in Miami? in the Amazon? in your hometown?)
Do you consider yourself as a scientist?
Clear selection
Why or why not? What other roles in life do you identify with and what do they mean? (for example: parent, sibling, citizen, member of a union/society/community/cultural or ethnic or racial group, etc.)
Why did you take on these roles?
How would you define science?
How would you define "scientist"?
How would you define "other ways of knowing" and how do they relate to science?
How do scientists and science engage with society now?
How should scientists and science engage with society? Is there an ideal?
How do you use science and/or other ways of knowing in your own work and/or personal lives?
Can you trace your ideas regarding science/scientist/society relationships to any sources/relationships/stories? What are they?
How does institutional context interact with these roles? (Like, does the role of "scientist" change when the scientist is employed in Academia vs. Nonprofit vs. Government vs. Other Spaces vs. Industry, etc.)
What do you struggle with in understanding your role and responsibilities to society?
What feels like a dimension of this topic that you wouldn't budge on? (like a foundational value, ethic)
Has taking on the roles you've described above changed your relationship to rivers?
Is there anything else that's important to comment on relating to our roles and responsibilities to society that isn't captured by the above questions?
