Milwaukee Waters Investigation - Teacher Interest Survey
The Milwaukee Waters Investigation (MWI) is an opportunity to connect teachers and students to local waterways and the community. Last year,  more than 325 students, supported by partners from industry, higher-education, and nonprofits took part in field experiences at beach and river locations around Milwaukee.

This year, we'll focus the field experience at  Lakeshore State Park, bringing teachers and students from across Milwaukee together with support of community science, education, environmental, and business partners to prepare for and use this event as part of a real-world exploration that focuses on Milwaukee’s waterways.  

Cost: None and includes a $200 stipend. 
Date & Time: Late January support through early May 8th field investigation - 9:30 am to 1:00 pm
Grades: 4th - 7th grade
Location: Lakeshore State Park (a peninsula in Lake Michigan by Summerfest and Discovery World.)

Project Components
  • Teacher Professional Development meetings: Four 1-hour meetings – one in-person and three Zoom. on February , March, April and May 14th.
  • 3 easy pre-investigation activities for the classroom and school yard.
  • Free in-class presentation: MKE's Waters and Beyond (world’s water resources) and an interactive 3D watershed model demo.
  • Day @ The Waters Investigation event in early May. Students tour the park as they rotate through activities with partner organizations, and then have a lakeside and city view picnic.
  • Post-investigation activity ideas and brief project evaluation surveys of students and teachers.

2. How many students would participate? There is a 35 student maximum.  *
3. Professional Development Meetings: The project team will offer 4 professional development workshops as a part of this project to help you prepare your students for the May field investigation: 3 Zoom and 1 in-person. These workshops will be 1 to 1.5 hours. A tentative schedule is late January, March, mid April and late May. Stipends will be paid based on workshops attended.  Are you willing to take advantage of these workshops?

4. Pre- and Post-Activities: The project team will offer you easy pre- and post-activities to prepare students for the investigation and assess the investigation data and student experience. Are you willing to take advantage of these activities?

5. In-class presentation: You are able to schedule a free in-class workshop between February 1 and March 29th to introduce students to their local waterways, watersheds, water use history, water quality challenges and improvements and simple solutions to protect water quality. Are you willing to take advantage of this in-class presentation?

6. Early May Event: Are you able to participate in the early May, Day @ the Waters Investigation from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm on Lakeshore State Park? You will be able to choose from a menu of activities on the Park that the students will rotate through. The event date is coming soon. Buses will be provided if needed. *
