Ask your child to think of special days they have waited for (birthday, last day of school, vacation, special visitors).  Ask:  How does waiting for something feel special?  If your child isn't the youngest or if there are younger kids in your extended family, ask if they remember waiting for a baby.  This story will be about waiting for a baby.
Print off the "I Can Get Ready" coloring page and then read this story to your child.
"Is the baby coming today, Mom?"  asked Emily.

"No, not today," Mom said, "but the baby is getting bigger and stronger..  Put your hand on my stomach.  Maybe you can feel the baby kick."

"The baby kicks inside you?" asked Emily.

"Yes," said Mom.  "You kicked too.  It won't be long before the baby is born.  I need you to help me get ready."

On Monday, Emily helped Mom put away the baby's new clothes and bottlers.  On Tuesday, they bought diapers at the store.  On Wednesday, Emily told her mom she wanted to give the baby her favorite teddy bear.  They put it in the crib so it would be there when the baby came home from the hospital.  On Thursday, the family waited, and on Friday, they waited.

On Saturday, Grandma came to stay, and Emily's mom and dad went to the hospital.  Soon Dad called to say that Emily had a new little brother.  At Mass on Sunday, Emily told everyone about her new brother.  On Monday, Dad said: "Today your mom and new brother will come home.  Let's make sure the house is ready for them."

Ask: What do you think Emily, Dad and Grandma might still need to do to get ready for Mom and the baby to come home? Help your child by walking through the rooms in your house and asking them what needs to be done in each room. *
Continue reading the story to your child.
When the house was ready, Dad and Emily made a welcome sign and taped it to the front door.  Dad drove to the hospital to get Mom and the new baby.  When they got home, Emily ran out to greet them.  Mom thanked her for making the sign and for getting the house ready.  "Now," Mom said to Emily, "sit down and you can hold your new baby brother."  She put the sleeping baby in Emily's arms.
Look at page 2 in your Gospel Weekly.  Have your child look at the pictures and retell the story of how Emily got ready for the new baby.  Have your child color in the "Welcome Baby!" sign on the top of the page.  Have your child color in the "I Can Get Ready " coloring page. *
