Making things in math class? Even if we’re online? How can your students make things to make math come alive? Building math from cardboard robots, slime, paintings, and birdhouses: Learn how to re-engage kids in math in ways that make math a lens for making sense of the world, and help them find their voice and agency in math class. Making Math helps create a safe community with lots of student discourse and discovery. They are designed to support all students—and especially English learners—to develop their math identities and grow their classroom leadership.

We’ll spend 4 days with brief whole-group Zoom sessions interspersed with time for you to make and to work with small groups of your colleagues. You’ll experience Making Math as a learner, as well as plan some experiences for your own students. You’ll join a growing group of North Coast Making Math teachers.

We’ll send you a box with the materials you’ll need for the making and provide access to Maker Learning Cycles for your grade.

You look in my room when they’re doing this and you think “oh my gosh, it’s chaotic, how could they learn anything?” and actually some of the best learning is happening with that chaos….
