SHTeam Workshops 2019 - Round Two
INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING IN PYTHON (MOUSA)

The goal of this workshop is to learn the basics of programming. Shads will learn these skills using the Python programming language, that is widely used for applications including data analytics & AI. Shads will first learn what programming is and why it’s so powerful. Through exercises, they will build their knowledge of fundamental programming skills, and at the end, they will be challenged to build a simple interactive game which will leverage everything they have learnt. This workshop does not require any previous programming experience, and is specifically for beginners.

HOW TO RAP (YASNA)

In short: this workshop will teach you how to rap! This is your chance to satisfy that deep-seated desire you have always had to become a superstar rapper. In this highly interactive workshop, SHADs will acquire the tools they need to write and deliver their first rap verses, so that they can use this amazing genre of music as a creative medium in the future. This workshop will also focus on illustrating the perceptions of rap music, breaking down the stigmas that surround it, and showing easy-to-use techniques employed by the likes of Eminem, Kanye West and Kendrick Lamar. SHADs should be ready to step out of their comfort zones, make mistakes, learn from one another and finally take their first steps towards becoming a rapper! No prior experience is needed!

IT'S ALL ABOUT PERSPECTIVE - GLOBAL HEALTH (SAARAH)

This workshop will provide you with a glimpse of what falls under global health issues and importantly, how these issues are represented in the media. You will be introduced to one analytic theory for analyzing problem representation: What’s the Problem Represented to Be? by Carol Bacchi. Using this approach, in groups you will analyze two pieces of media on the same global health-related issue in order to understand the many ways a health problem can be represented and how different representation advances different solutions. You will present your findings to the rest of the group. There will be a focus on the social and political determinants of health. Topics integrated into the workshop may include: Refugee Health, Infectious Diseases, Indigenous Health, and Mental Health.

COMMUNITY GARDENING (ANDREW)

This community gardening workshop would explore the complexity of growing organic food. The interdisciplinary activity ties scientific with experience working in local food systems. Participants will learn about how to prepare a garden bed for planting, how to amend soil to promote healthy plant growth, and strategies for planting to ensure a consistent harvest, year after year. This workshop will investigate the benefits conferred by utilization of community spaces, and reveal how science can be used to maximize impacts of community spaces.

SOCIAL INFLUENCE AND YOU: HUMAN SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR (CARA)

Ever think about what influences people to act a certain way in social situations? Ever wonder why some people people obey to authorities, no matter how awful the command? This workshop will discuss these topics as we dive into the field of social psychology and learn about human social behaviour. This workshop will be interactive as we discuss social dynamics, identify examples of social influence in every day society, and learn about some of the most influential (and unethical?) psychology experiments to date. The goal of the workshop is for you to leave with a better understanding of group behaviour and social dynamics.
