People forced to live as their inauthentic selves feel unable to enjoy their lives or achievements. Experts estimate that 30-60% of LGBTQ+ people experience depression during their lives because they don’t feel safe to live in their true identity.

LGBTQ+ people don’t just come out to their loved ones. They come out repeatedly whenever they meet new people at their workplaces, after moving cities, or when they meet new acquaintances. There’s always a chance they’ll meet someone who doesn’t accept their identity or will subject them to homophobic treatment. It leads to increased anxiety that affects their quality of life.

Inaccessible treatments or lack of professional help contribute to an amplification of the following mental health struggles often faced by individuals within this community.

Compared to the general population, LGBTQI+ people are more likely to have thoughts of suicide. LGBTQI+ people aged 18 and over were over eighteen times more likely to have considered attempting suicide in the previous 12 months.

You’ve noticed a fellow staff member making comments that are subtly homophobic and transphobic, which are making you and others uncomfortable. You’re unsure if this person realizes what they are saying is problematic or not. What should you do?

Confront them in front of other people for being discriminatory and rude, they shouldn’t be saying those things and they should know better.

When the staff member has left the room, inform the rest of your co-workers about the staff member making homophobic and transphobic comments. Report the comments to your supervisor as soon as you can.

Pull them aside to let them know that you noticed their comments were homophobic and transphobic. Provide an example of their problematic behaviour and give them feedback on how to improve.

Leave them alone. They’re a good co-worker you know they aren’t that kind of person. The comments are only subtle and you’re sure they are not doing it on purpose/don’t realise it is problematic. You’ll report it if it happens again.

You’re helping out with a program when someone comes over and says, “Hey this is Charlie, Charlie is here to help us set-up.” And then walks away leaving you with Charlie.
