How I work:
In my work I am interested in "phenomenon glazes". These are glazes that are highly textured, gloopy, and drippy. These types of glazes are also responsible for the crawling, cracking and lunar surfaces you see in my pieces. These glazes are hard to predict, and how they turn out is dependent on several variables, some of which are out of my control.
See examples of my work at: https://acparnell.com/
I am unable to predict exactly how the glaze will transform during the kiln firing. This element of chance and trust is central to my work, and allows for interesting and unexpected results to arise. This also means that my works are one-off pieces which cannot be replicated. So, for your special commission, I am able to look to previous works as inspiration but I will not be able to replicate them.
I take inspiration from broad sources, so please feel free to be as abstract or creative as you like when filling out the description section of the form. In the past I have interpreted songs, emotions, and terms such as "reindeer moss", "Elgar's Cello Concerto", "melting strawberry ice-cream" and "a pink sea slug in a rock pool". Whilst reference photos can be shown for understanding your vision, out of love and respect for fellow artists, please do not ask me to replicate the work of other ceramicists.
Please note that clay is a very slow medium. Handmade pieces take time make, dry and fire, so the commission process can take up to 15 weeks. If you are in a rush, please let me know - I may be able to help accommodate your request, but this is not guaranteed.
With love & clay,
AC Parnell
