INTRODUCTION: We continue our Lesson 4 with your "Receive the Lord" booklet.  The "Receive the Lord" booklet will help you to prepare to receive Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time. The booklet will focus on the creation of a first Communion banner as a way for you to understand and remember all the amazing things that you will experience when you receive Jesus in holy Communion. So, if you have located your book, we are ready to go! First start by reading pages 11, 12 and 13 then answer the questions below. HINT: Remember to look in your readings for the answers.
When we say "Amen," we are joining the priest and our whole church family to say, "Yes, we believe." *
As we prepare to receive the Eucharist what prayer do we join in saying? *
During the Eucharist, the priest or minister will hold up the host that is Jesus, saying "The Body of Christ." You will answer __________________? *
After you receive the Eucharist and return to your pew, you can kneel and say a prayer of _____________________? *
WORD AND PICTURE PUZZLES!! Great job. Now it's time to challenge yourself with the word "Amen."  Amen is a word we say at least four (4) times during the Mass. On page 11 of  your "Receive the Lord" booklet you will find a box. Try to put the letters of the word "Amen" in each row and column without having any of the letters appear more than once in any section, row, or column.

Once you have completed that word puzzle turn to page 13 and see if you can find 8 differences between the two pictures and list them below.

Good luck and don't forget to send me a picture of your completed work when you are done!
What are the eight differences you found between the two pictures? *
FANTASTIC! You are doing a great job! As we are growing closer to your First Communion Day let's take some time to stop and reflect on exactly what is going to be happening. Your First Communion Day is a very special day, and we want you to be ready for the blessing you are about to receive.

When you were preparing for your First Reconciliation, we talked about how important preparation is. It is important to prepare to receive Jesus in the Eucharist not only for your First Communion but every time we receive Jesus in the Eucharist. Two ways that you can prepare are with prayer and fasting. One of the best ways to prepare to receive Jesus is to pray. Prayer is a conversation with God. We all need a few minutes each day in a quiet place to sit and talk to him. Be sure to be praying to God as you begin your final preparations for your First Communion. Another way to prepare to receive Jesus in the Eucharist is by abstaining from food for one hour before Mass. What does "abstaining" mean? It means going without. We don't eat or drink anything except water for one hour before Mass.

Attached to this lesson are 4 documents:  What is Communion-Pg. 1, What is Communion-Pg 2, Transubstantiation, and A Guide to Receiving your First Communion

Carefully read these over to help you understand exactly and in more detail what Communion is and what you should do to practice receiving Communion. Over the next several weeks be sure to use the "A Guide to Receiving Your First Communion" document to practice how to approach the priest, how to hold your hands, and how to respond and receive the host. You can even take this paper to church to watch how your parents, family members and others receive Communion.  When you are done please answer the questions below.
Catholics are supposed to be in a "state of grace" before receiving communion. This means they have not committed a serious sin? *
A person must be baptized before receiving First Communion? *
"Transubstantiation" is the change of the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. *
During communion, when the priest says to us "Body of Christ" our response is ________________? *
FIRST COMMUNION BANNER: Great job! Now you are ready to continue building your First Communion banner.  On page 11 of your booklet, you are asked to add an image of the host, which represents the Body of Christ, and on page 12 you are asked to add the image of a lamb, which represents Christ.

You can look at my banner below as an example. Your banners are really starting to fill in with all of the amazing things that we see and experience at Mass.

Don't forget to send me a picture as you continue to fill in your banner!!
FAMILY TIME CHART: Super job! Now it is time to work on your "Family Time" chart. Our Lesson 4 chart focuses on Jesus' Special Supper.

Eucharist brings us closer to Jesus and closer to his community of believers, the Church. Just as family gatherings bring family members closer together, gatherings of Jesus' family at Mass brings people who gather in his name closer together.

Take some time to think about some special holidays and meals you celebrate together as a family and then complete the chart included on the Family Time Chart.

Be sure to send me a picture of your completed work!!
SUPER GREAT JOB! Now it is time to close out your lesson. You will need a loaf of bread or some rolls to do this. Gather with your Mom and/or Dad and read through the "Sharing Bread" prayer pictured below.

You can share your bread as you read through this prayer.
