Access, Egress and stairwell safety
Maintenance of site access and egress routes are a vital component of worker safety of every phase of construction.
Exterior access/egress considerations include:
- Clearing snow and ice during cold weather
- Keeping doorways clear of debris and materials
- Adhering to posted site signage, control zones and alternate site access routes during completion of exterior work.
Interior access/egress considerations include:
- Keeping hallways, doorways, elevator bays and stairwells clear of debris, material and equipment
- Adequate lighting in common areas, walkways, stairwells are required to move safely around site. Outages of permanent or temporary light sources should be reported to the Site CSO immediately. Workers are prohibited from plugging tools into portable light strings in all instances.
Congested hallways and stairwells have the potential to result in serious injury, as well as causing dangerous delays in emergency response or site evacuation
