April 19, 2021 CTLE Virtual Workshop Registration - Student Engagement and Full Participation for an Inclusive Classroom
Student Engagement and Full Participation for an Inclusive Classroom
Date: Monday, April 19, 11:00am-12:00pm
Facilitator: Ching-Yu Huang, Biology and CTLE

Active learning reduces academic learning gaps for underrepresented students. But how do we ensure all students have a chance to participate fully in the learning process? Why do some students seem to participate more frequently and learn more easily than others? In this workshop, we will begin with exploring the imbalances of participation (e.g. introvert and extrovert, first-gen and their multigenerational peers, and international students) and a conversation about how cultural assumptions might influence student interaction and their level of engagement. Participants will then explore strategies for a teaching redesign to encourage full participation and accessibility for all students with selected active learning strategies (e.g., peer-instruction, think-pair-share and jigsaw, inquiry-based learning, real-world application, concept maps and strip sequence). The participants will brainstorm and apply these teaching strategies to develop their own classroom exercises that are appropriate and efficient to promote engagement to their students.
