Choice of Opti, Basic or Intermediate Sail Camp
Use the following guidelines to help you choose whether the student should attend Opti, Basic or Intermediate Sail Camp.  If additional help is needed, contact Elizabeth Keenen at elizkeenen@yahoo.com or 303-902-0010.  Keowee Sailing Club reserves the right to re-direct a student from one camp level to another (e.g., Intermediate to Basic), in order to obtain the best outcome for the student and to achieve the desired training environment for all concerned.  In each case, space must be available in the most appropriate session for the student to be accepted.
Opti Camp
Opti Camp is for youth 8 and 9 years of age ONLY.  Opti Camp has a very limited number of spaces - 9 children total.  Opti Camp is an opportunity for younger children with limited or no sailing experience to learn to sail Optimists and/or SailQubes.  Each child will sail solo in an Optimist and/or SailQube.
Basic Camp
Basic Camp is for youth 10-17 years of age that have some, limited or no sailing experience.  They may be beginners, or perhaps they have attended a prior sail camp or two, but need more training time to fully master the fundamentals.  If they have attended KSC Basic Camp for three or more years already and are confident they have mastered the basics, they should review the requirements for Intermediate Camp below to determine if they are ready for Intermediate Camp.  Generally, a youth will attend Basic Camp for three years before advancing to Intermediate Camp (e.g., a youth will attend when 10, 11 & 12 years of age, then advance when 13 years of age).  Each child will sail solo in a boat appropriate to their skill level.
Intermediate Camp (by invitation and/or approval)
Intermediate Camp will be for those who have attended KSC Basic Camp (or equivalent training) in the past, and are ready to go to the next level.  These intermediate students should already be able to rig their boat with little or no assistance.  They should understand the points of sail and be able to read wind direction and trim their sails for the different points of sail.  They can confidently sail a boat single-handed around a triangular racing course, including tacking upwind to a mark, and must be mature enough to take personal responsibility for improving their sailing skills.  The focus will be on skill building at a more aggressive pace.  Students who are not seriously interested in building their sailing skills should not apply.  Although there will be no specific minimum age requirement, we believe most students that are ready for the Intermediate Camp will be at least 13 years of age in addition to meeting the aforementioned requirements.  Students through age 17 may attend the Intermediate Camp.  We expect graduates of Intermediate Camp to participate in subsequent youth race days if possible.  All intermediate applicants must be “qualified” by the KSC staff to be accepted.  Past attendees of Intermediate Camp are automatically approved, as are past Basic Camp attendees who received an email notification at the conclusion of the 2023 camps that they were approved for advancement to Intermediate Camp.  If you should have any question regarding your child's eligibility for Intermediate Camp, please contact Elizabeth Keenen at elizkeenen@yahoo.com or 303-902-0010.
Requirements for all KSC Sail Camps
Campers must meet the age requirements of the camp as stated above, must be in good physical condition, not having any limitations that would limit them from being active on a boat and in the water, and must be able to swim.  A swim test will be given.
Campers will be asked to provide their own clothing, lifejacket, closed toed shoes and other items of a personal nature, with details to be provided on a separate information sheet to be sent to the e-mail address provided in this application about two weeks prior to the camp.
Lunch and snacks are provided. Campers will need to bring a refillable/reusable water bottle with a handle or a loop that can be tied onto the boat.
The parent or guardian will need to provide a medical consent form to allow someone at the camp to transport the camper to a medical facility and seek emergency treatment if required, and a waiver of liability and indemnity agreement, to participate in the sailing camp.
The camper must follow the rules of the camp, and if they do not, the staff may request the parent, guardian or emergency contact, to come to the camp and pick up the camper.
The camper must not be at KSC outside the hours of 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (5:30 p.m. for Intermediate Camp).  The only exception to this is when the parent or guardian has obtained agreement in advance with a specific adult KSC member to assume responsibility for the camper.
