Anniversary Seminar July 3-4 2021
This gathering marks the 30th consecutive year that the Whitsun Seminar takes place and
that is cause for CELEBRATION. This not only hallmarks the legacy shifu Ma left behind, but
it also signifies the continuing effort to promote his Wu style Taijiquan.
Like the years before, this seminar is still all about practice. But because of this anniversary,
the communal aspect has precedence. In an open and friendly atmosphere, we would like to
invite everybody to exchange their memories, experiences, instructions, ideas and
understanding on shifu Ma and his taijiquan.
Regardless of level and skill - anyone is welcome and everything is possible. Besides your
preference, you can try something new, rehearse what you have learned, fine-tune your
performance skills, or you can learn about the internal energetics, underlying theories
and/or martial applications, all is still aimed to increase and deepen our common
understanding of shifu Ma's taijiquan.
The program will be organized based on participants registrations, preferences and wishes.
The organization takes into account the Dutch and local (German) legislation regarding
Covid-19. Despite these mandated legislations, we still want to accommodate all participants
who want to partake in facets that require physical contact (tuishou and/or martial
applications), but this is done explicitly at one’s own risk!
New in this seminar is the introduction of "Peer Learning'. Peer learning is a voluntary
contribution of a participant on any subject of his/her choice that can increases our
understanding of taijiquan. The subject is free (e.g. qigong, meditation, [different style of]
taijiquan, martial and/or weapon training, other forms of self-cultivation etc.) and can be
theoretical and practical in nature. As long as it is about support, understanding and
deepening of shifu Ma's taijiquan!
Equally innovative about this seminar is the introduction of two additional updates: a presentation on
a specific topic and an open panel discussion.
This year's presentation will be given by Mark and will focus on one of the more important
substantiating taijiquan concepts: Wen-Wu (the cultural and martial).
The purpose of the 'open-panel discussion' is to address and discuss all kinds of (individual)
issues concerning taijiquan to which, under the supervision of Bart, Richard and Mark, an
attempt will be made to find and formulate an answer in dialogue with those present.
Although the set-up has changed somewhat over the years, all past Whitsun-seminars would
not have been possible without the unwavering commitment and dedication of its initial
organizer and personal confidant of shifu Ma, Bart Saris. We owe him a great deal of
gratitude and that's why we would like to take this opportunity to put him also in the
spotlight! For this year’s seminar we have made a general program.
