General Information
Reel Stories (Powered by BAVC Media) is a nonprofit youth media organization that combats the significant gender imbalance in film production. We have offered the Reel Stories Institute since 2018 in order to assist young adults in their transition from students to professionals.

The Reel Stories Institute is for women and gender expansive filmmakers ages 15-24. Please contact gracepatterson@bavc.org if you have questions about eligibility.

The Reel Stories Institute will be weekdays July 10th-21st, from 10am-4pm. This program is currently planning to be held in-person in Oakland, CA. Participants will work in a team to create a portfolio-quality piece in just two weeks with the support of Reel Stories staff and mentors. 

The cost for attending the Reel Stories Institute is $1,200. However, no filmmaker is ever turned away due to lack of funds, and there are scholarships and discounts available to any student with financial need. There will be 10-12 students selected for The Institute.

The first round of the application closes March 31st, 2023. However, we may still be looking to fill a few spots, so if you are interested in attending please still apply, and Grace Patterson (gracepatterson@bavc.org) will get back to you ASAP to let you know if you have been accepted.

BAVC Media COVID-19 Protocols
These are BAVC Media's current COVID-19 protocols. These protocols are subject to change based on county and country guidelines.

Masks

All participants and staff are required to wear a well fitting mask at all times for in-person programs except when filming on camera and eating or drinking in a designated location. We encourage participants and staff to wear N95 or KN95 masks.
If participants or staff do not have a mask, our organization will provide a mask.

Staff and Participant Screening

Staff members and participants must complete a daily health screening before arriving on set. Any staff or participant that doesn't complete the screening, or shows signs of illness must remain home.

Symptoms

If a participant or staff member has begun showing symptoms of COVID-19 (either through the screening or as observed by staff), they will be asked to not participate in in-person programming until they either test negative for COVID-19, or if they are symptom free for 10 days.

COVID-19 Testing and Vaccines: Attendance Requirements

All participants are required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or provide a negative test result for COVID-19 dated within 72 hours of attending in-person programs. All BAVC staff are required to be fully vaccinated to work in-person, with reasonable accommodations considered for medical and/or religious reasons. If any participants test positive for COVID-19 while attending BAVC Media programs in-person, they must immediately contact the leader of the program they are attending, and are not allowed to attend in-person programming until they have tested negative for COVID-19 and have been symptom free for 10 days.
