The PGI Display Operator Certification course is an eight-hour safety course to train people how to be lead pyrotechnicians for display fireworks. For those that purchase a book and pass the exam, you can obtain formal PGI DOC certification after you meet the experience requirements. The morning is focused on classroom instruction, followed by lunch, and live fire exercises will take place in the afternoon at an offsite location (TBD). After the live fire exercises are completed, an exam will be given for those that wish to pursue PGI certification.

This course can be used to meet the State of Virginia continuing education requirements. Individuals that are only interested in taking the course for continuing education do not have to purchase the PGI DOC course book, but they will not be eligible for PGI certification if they do not purchase the book. This course is free of charge to public safety employees, and to MAPAG members that are not seeking PGI certification. For individuals that are seeking PGI certification and are not public safety employees, the cost of the course is $60 (this is what the PGI charges us for the PGI Display Certification Operator Study Guide).

The PGI display operator course includes the PGI Display Operator Certification Study Guide, lunch, fireworks for live-fire exercises, and a certificate of attendance. Students should bring their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including head protection (hat), eye protection, hearing protection, closed-toe shoes, and cotton or similar flame-resistant, long-sleeve clothing. Also, please bring a chair to sit in for the live fire exercises.

To be PGI certified as a lead shooter, you must attend the PGI Display Operator training course, pass the exam at the end of the course with an 80 percent (60 out of 75 questions) or better grade. The applicant must additionally demonstrate experience working with fireworks displays by documenting his/her having worked on FOUR 1.3G displays (in any significant crew capacity) and ONE 1.3G display as EITHER Lead or Co-Lead Shooter.
