In this class, students will
start out learning the basics of how to tune and handle a guitar. From
there will move to finger placement for playing open chords and playing notes
for melody as well as strumming and picking techniques. Students will
start/continue learning how to read basic sheet music while playing rhythm
(chords) or melody (individual notes).
Choir:
No previous musical training necessary. Open to students in grades 6-8, interested in learning to sing as part of an overall performance group. Students are taught the fundamentals of music theory, music appreciation, and vocal techniques, while learning a repertoire of fun and exciting music. Students in this class may perform periodically throughout the school year.
Student Aide:
Students support younger aged children through small group activities, individual tutoring, or in office staff support roles.This is only for 8th grade students who are in good academic standing.
Agriculture Associates:
Students are immersed in expanding their content knowledge through both research study and hands-on application opportunity on our Alva Farm.
Art Appreciation:
Students are introduced to the rigor and routine of the art production process including planning, producing, and reflecting on art. With an emphasis on studio arts, students explore a wide range of 2D and 3D media, skills, and techniques. 2D and 3D will be split into two sections, semester 1 and 2. Art History and influential artists are combined into large scale projects. Students develop technical skills, foster their expressive abilities, and employ the use of the elements of art throughout the production process.
Portfolio Art
8th grade only must have previous art classes and approval from art teacher. Students explain the significance of their personal artwork, investigate multiple artistic project solutions, and create expressive artwork. Portfolio building with the intention of creating unified pieces of artwork. Students manipulate 2D and 3D media, skills, and techniques toward a desired project outcome within a studio art environment through the exploration of either contemporary or historical art viewpoints. Projects may include but not be limited to: drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, mixed media, pottery, and sculpture.
S.T.E.M
In this class students will explore scientific questioning
through self-designed and self-driven labs and experiments with data collection
and analysis techniques. Students will engage in technology &
engineering through an array of activities throughout the year that include
robotics and 3-D printing as well as others. This class will focus on
enriching students understanding of science and technology through exciting
hands-on activities.
Latinos In Action
This course offers an asset-based approach to bringing the graduation and opportunity for Latino students, working from within the educational system to create positive change. Our program operates as a year long elective course taught by highly qualified teacher at middle school with the goal of empowering Latino youth to lead and strengthen their communities through college and career readiness. Students will be involved in serving the community while developing their leadership skills.
PE
Physical education provides cognitive content and instruction designed to develop
motor skills, knowledge, and behaviors for physical activity and physical
fitness. Supporting schools to establish physical
education daily can provide students with the ability and confidence to be
physically active for a lifetime.
