Overview: The goal of workshops is to bring together people from different backgrounds to discuss open questions with big implications, and then for each group to deliver a concise summary of their thinking to the broader conference.
Technology & Human Physiology, Brain, & Behavior (HPPB) Data
1. Forbidden Data, Protected Populations?
Are there any aspects of Human Physiology, Brain, or Behavior (HPBB) data that should be illegal to collect or analyze? To what extent should HPBB data ever be collected and used for commercial purposes? For political purposes (e.g. targeted political advertisements)? Which populations are most vulnerable and how should we protect them.
This working group will identify potentially problematic uses of personal data, and articulate 4 real or hypothetical uses that illustrate the risks for 1) All adults, 2) Young adults (age 12-17), 3) Children <12, 4) Cognitively atypical or impaired adults.
2. Dangerous Devices?
What commonly used (or soon to be commonly used) devices pose the greatest unrecognized risk to personal privacy — for a user, for a user’s social connections, for incidental bystanders in public and private spaces? Which of these groups deserves additional protections — and what are practical policies that would provide such protections?
This working group will explore and explain how technologies that are ubiquitous or likely to become commonplace pose specific dangers to individuals and society. They will articulate 2-4 compelling examples that are not yet widely recognized.
Neuroethics & Policy
3. Principles & Regulations?
What ethical principles should be used to guide the regulation of neurotechnology?
This working group will brainstorm and articulate a longer list of candidate ethical principles that could guide regulation, discuss their implications, and then rank prioritize to produce a more concise list (e.g. 3-7 guiding ethical principles).
4. Rewind, Fast-forward?
If you could send a few policy recommendations concerning personal data & privacy back in time, 30 years, what would be your top priorities and practical suggestions? If an expert was visiting from 30 years in the future, given this same prompt, what do you think they would recommend?
This working group will discuss the prompt and narrow in on 2-3 backward looking and 2-3 forward looking proposals.
