In Movements That Matter (re-mixed digital v. 202012), Kim narrativizes and embodies a diasporic identity that lives with and is formed by the precariousness of translation and of going in-between spaces, lands, customs, and languages. The rambling essayistic narrative weaves in different strands of anecdotes and subjective understanding of history that spans from social housing development projects in Korea, musings on Scandinavian language, the joy of eating melons, favorite artworks that are “re-cited” and performed, tales from the pandemic, and wrestling with internalized homophobia.
In this digital performance version that is re-cut and re-mixed using the footage from the original performance documentation in 2019 at Changgo theatre in Seoul, Kim spins an absurd and painful tale that captures the comical process of coming out late in life and its repercussions, that is juggled with tales of illness and survival strategies during the pandemic.
Movements That Matter (디지털 리믹스 v. 202012)에서 작가 쥬노 김은 공간, 땅, 관습, 언어 사이를 오가는 번역의 불안정성으로 인해 형성된 디아스포라적 정체성을 서사화하고 또 구현한다. 퍼포먼스를 이끄는 작가의 규정불가능한 형식의 에세이는 여러 사적인 일화와 역사에 관한 주관적인 이해가 뒤섞여 있다. 한국의 주택개발 사업에서부터 북유럽 언어에 관한 숙고, 멜론을 먹는 즐거움, 재인용되고 퍼포먼스되는 예술 작품에 대한 매혹, 판데믹 상황에서 발생하는 생활, 동성애 혐오를 마주하는 씨름의 과정 등을 넘나든다.
PPC에서 디지털 퍼포먼스로 공연되는 Movements That Matter(2020)는 2019년 서울 창고극장에서 공연된 작업의 기록 영상을 파운드 푸티지로 삼아 새롭게 편집, 퍼포밍하는 버전이다. 작가는 중년이 되어 커밍아웃 하는 코믹한 과정과 그 파장을 포착하는 어리석고 고통스러운 경험을, 질병을 둘러싼 이야기와 판데딕 상황에서의 생존 전략에 관한 입장과 회전/공전시킨다.

Jeuno JE Kim bio.
With a background in feminist theology, music and radio, Jeuno JE Kim’s artistic practice and research have focused on sound, performance, video, and text. Her peripatetic interest has an inter-disciplinary framework, by mixing disparate methods and cultural cannons. Her work is influenced by the on going modernization in Korea and the Pacific East region, and the urgency of the political, sociological, and cultural issues that permeate this reality such as nationalism, identity construction, and historical narration. She is currently a senior lecturer at HDK-Valand, Gothenburg University
쥬노 김(Jeuno JE Kim)은 신학, 경제학, 음악 및 라디오 분야의 배경을 바탕으로 공연, 사운드, 드로잉, 애니메이션, 비디오 및 텍스트를 매체로 하는 시각 예술가다. 한국에서 태어나 현재 스웨덴 말뫼와 덴마크 코펜하겐을 오가며 작업하는 작가는 스웨덴 예테보리 발랜드 예술 아카데미(Valand Art Academy)의 교수로 활동한다. 쥬노 김은 하버드 대학교에서 페미니스트 해방 신학 석사를, 시카고 일리노이 대학교에서 MFA를 마쳤다.

Seewon Hyun bio.
Seewon Hyun is a curator and writer based in Seoul, South Korea. Since 2013 she is the director of Audio Visual Pavilion, an exhibition space located in Seoul.(
www.audiovisualpavilion.org/eng) Her interest in context, the exhibitionary, and site-specificity has led to projects that are manifested in an array of spaces from traditional Korean houses, to performance and theater spaces, museums, galleries, as well as the printed page. Hyun has published numerous books on contemporary art and has curated a long list of exhibitions. She is currently a PhD fellow at Yonsei University, and writing a doctorial thesis on the cartography of exhibitions.
큐레이터. 현재 시청각 랩을 열어 전시와 연구 방법론, 작가들과의 전시 형식을 탐구하고 있다. <SMSM 10>(시청각, 2019), <A Snowflake>(국제갤러리, 2017), <Move and Scale>(시청각, 2015) 등 다수의 전시를 기획했으며 전시론, 작가론, 사물과 이미지를 탐구하는 저서 『 1:1 다이어그램』(2018), 『아무것도 손에 들지 않고 말하기』(2017), 『사물 유람』(2014) 등을 펴냈다. 공동 역서로는 『 래디컬 뮤지엄』 (2016,현실문화연구)가 있으며 현재 전시 방법론과 전시를 둘러싼 도면과 사진의 수행성, 매개 방식을 탐구하는 박사 논문을 작성 중이다.

Kyusun Anna Shim bio.
Kyusun Anna Shim is a graphic designer and editor who is interested in information science and visual/cultural communication. Her current investigation focuses on comparative graphic analysis of the dotted/dashed lines vs. the solid line and examining the hierarchical relationship between the two. In PPC, Shim collaborates with Jeuno Kim on “Movements That Matter”, to realize the graphic, video and editorial elements. Shim also contributes to PPC’s exhibition at AVP Lab, with a video piece PPCML (Performance, Practice, Curating, Manual Lecture).
심규선은 그래픽디자이너이다. 전시 PPC와 그 안에서 행해지는 쥬노 김의 퍼포먼스, Movements That Matter의 그래픽 디자인과 코디네이팅을 담당했으며, 그 과정을 통해 PPCML(퍼포먼스 프렉티스 큐레이팅 메뉴얼 렉처)을 작업한 작가이기도 하다. 편집디자이너로서 그는 정보의 상태 뿐 아니라 정보 그 자체에 관심과 집착을 갖고 있으며, 최근에는 '왜 점선은 실선의 하위속성으로 쓰이는지'를 생각하는 중이다.

신진영 (申振映 SHIN, JINYOUNG)
프로듀서, 프로덕션 이니셔티브 apparat/US 리더
신진영은 국내외 컨템포러리 / 다원예술(nterdisciplinary arts) 작품을 주요하게 소개해 온 ‘페스티벌 봄’(2011-2013), ‘국립아시아문화전당 예술극장’(2013-2016), ‘국립현대미술관 다원예술’(2016-2020)의 프로듀서로 활동했다.
최근(2019~) 다양한 장르와 매체 사이의 유연한 접점과 가능성의 영역을 탐색하는 프로덕션 이니셔티브 apparat/US를 구축하여 유기적이고 지속가능한 방식의 제작 환경을 다져나가는 데 관심을 두고, 기획, 제작, 협력 등 다양한 방식을 통해 다학제적인 프로젝트에 동행하며 한계를 넓혀나가고 있다.
Jinyoung Shin has worked as a producer at Festival Bo:m(2011-2013), Asian Arts Theatre of ACC Gwangju(2013-2016) and MMCA Performing Arts(2016-2020), which focused on Korean and international contemporary/interdisciplinary arts.
With a strong interest in cultivating organic and sustainable environments for production, Shin set up a production initiative called “apparat/US” in 2019 to seek fluid intersections and realm of possibilities for a range of art forms and mediums, and has been expanding her boundaries by taking part in multidisciplinary projects with various approaches including conception, production and collaboration.
