Bynum Academic Scholarship
The Bynum Academic Scholarship is in honor of Barbara Bynum-Hollis. Born in 1950 to a sharecropper (her mother), whose father had to flee from the southern part of the United States with his family to Philadelphia, PA for his safety. Her father was given a pig and bundle of peanuts, which he bartered for cash. He also made his way to Philadelphia from the south, seeking his older sister. In Barbara’s teen years she became an unwed mother. Through determination, she completed high school and found a full-time job. After small successes some years later, she entered college and completed her degree at Temple University in four years with now, a total of three children in tow. She was the first in her family to receive a college education. Today, she has now retired from an executive position with the city of Phila, has had several home-based businesses, and later became a mastered real estate investor. The mission of this scholarship is to give support to people with the unexpected challenge of single parenting and the resilience to never give up.

This scholarship will pay for the academic fee to attend school for one student, for one school year in Belize (Belize City, San Pedro, or Caye Caulker). Qualified recipients must be a child of a single parent or they themselves are unwed (male or female).

The deadline for the application is August 8th. The announcement of recipients is August 17th.
