Seismica invites applications to join the Seismica Board for the following roles:
- Handling Editors with expertise in the following disciplines: Cryoseismology, Structural Seismology, Education, Outreach, and Community Science related to seismology and earthquake science. We aim to appoint 3-5 new Handling Editors to begin their two-year commitments on January 1, 2023. Expertise may be demonstrated by a history of publication, review, editing, or practice in these disciplines or a combination thereof.
- Standards & Copy Editing Team members. Following a higher-than-expected rate of submissions to Seismica, we aim to appoint 2-3 new members of the Standards & Copy Editing Team to begin their two-year commitments on January 1, 2023. Team members have research interests within the disciplinary scope, including seismology, earthquake science, and related education and outreach. We are looking for S&CE team members with basic to advanced knowledge in LaTeX, python and bash or who are willing to learn quickly.
- Media & Branding Team is expanding, and seeking 2-3 new team members to contribute to Web Content Creation & Management, Seismica Merchandising, and Strategic Planning & Management. They will begin their two-year commitments on January 1, 2023. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals, who have experience creating science focused multimedia content, and the ability to communicate complex ideas in an engaging and accessible way to a range of audiences.
Seismica strives to be accessible, transparent, respectful, credible, and progressive and we seek Board Members who share our key values and are committed to working toward a globally representative, researcher-run journal which actively supports diversity, equity and inclusion in seismology and earthquake science. Like all positions at Seismica, a no-money independent journal, this is a volunteer role.
When a manuscript is submitted to Seismica, the Production Editor checks the initial submission and then sends a request to a Handling Editor who recruits reviewers, assesses the manuscript and the reviews, and makes a decision on whether to accept the paper (including managing the revision process). Handling Editors should average 3-5 papers per year, and attend or watch monthly Seismica Board meetings to give input and stay updated on journal policies and programs. The time required is 0.5-1 hr per week for staying up to date with Seismica business, plus 3-5 hours per manuscript handled. Handling Editors may manage their own workload with the choice to accept or decline each request from the Production Editor depending on immediate availability, disciplinary expertise, and to avoid conflict of interest.
The Handling Editor then passes the manuscript to a member of the Standards & Copy Editing (S&CE) team for production. The S&CE team member copy-edits the manuscript (correcting typos and grammar, suggesting style and/or grammar edits) and produces the files with the layout designed for publication (converts submitted templates to proofs, liaise with authors and editors regarding changes, manage article metadata). S&CE team members are involved in many steps of the publication process and exchange with authors, editors and Board Members for every manuscript and any changes that could be made to the publication procedure. In addition, Seismica Board members are invited to participate in task forces contributing to journal management (optional, depending on availability and interest). Skills practiced: LaTeX, coding/scripting in various languages (esp. Python, XML) for document conversions, general writing/editing of scientific texts, proofreading, attention to details. The time required is 0.5-1 hr per week for staying up to date with Seismica business, plus 1-3 hours per manuscript copyedited and produced. Team members may accept or decline each request from the S&CE chairs, depending on immediate availability.
The Media & Branding Team is responsible for promoting the journal, its publications, and the Seismica initiative to the global community. With input from the Editorial Board, the M&B Team develops key messages about Seismica’s values, products, and benefits with the goal of engaging others in conversation about open science and opportunities for contributing to Seismica. They work with other Seismica teams to ensure brand consistency across all media and communication platforms. The team meets weekly for 1 hour to plan and coordinate activities, which are currently focused in five areas: promoting Upcoming Publications and News, engaging Seismica Ambassadors, Social Media Communications, supporting Meetings & Conferences, and Creative Content & Messaging. Team members are responsible for managing projects and activities within their assigned focus area, with input from stakeholders. We anticipate M&B Team members will devote ~2 hours per week. The Media & Branding Team is expanding, and seeking new team members to contribute to Web Content Creation & Management, Seismica Merchandising, and Strategic Planning & Management.
Seismica supports its Board members with well-defined workflows, policies and tools, access to advice and mentoring from experienced editors, copy-editors and colleagues on the Seismica Board (via email and Slack), Seismica Ambassador training (to develop literacy in Open Access publishing, and visible record of contributions to scholarly publishing (on the journal website and by name recognition on the published articles).
