Important Information for Applicants
We appreciate your interest in the Youth in Policing Initiative – STUDENT position. The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Youth in Policing (YIP) Initiative is a paid personal, professional, and community development opportunity for Durham youth aged 15-18. The program has been running since 2006 in partnership with Ontario's Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.

This is a paid student position running for 14 working weeks, approximately 10 hours per week, on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays. You will work on Wednesdays from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Working hours are subject to change with prior noticeThe rate of pay for this position is $17.60 per hour, in accordance with the Ontario adult minimum wage. The initial start date will be on Wednesday November, 19, 2025 and end on Wednesday, March 25, 2026. The 2025 Winter Initiative will be in-person at the Ontario Tech University/Durham College North Campus; however, this is subject to change with prior notice. 

Successful candidates hired for YIP will be enrolled in a cooperative education program with Durham Continuing Education with the opportunity to earn 1 credit. Classes will be hosted during work days, there is nothing you need to add to your timetable. Enrollment in this credit is a condition of employment.
Student Eligibility
To qualify for the YIP Student position, applicants must:
  • Be between the ages of 15-18
  • Reside in the Regional Municipality of Durham
  • Be available for the entire duration of the program
  • Be legally eligible to work in Canada and have a Social Insurance Number
  • Be currently enrolled in secondary school (high school)
  • Be returning to secondary school (high school) in September of 2025
  • Must not have any family members employed by a Police Service in Ontario
  • Successfully pass a DRPS Background Investigation

Selection Process
As a part of the selection for this position, all applicants may be assessed through an application review, interviews, and background investigation. Interview will consist of panels with two–four DRPS members.
