STO Application 2020: Guidelines for STO
Deadline to submit application: August 3rd

Are you a leader in your school's theater program?

Each year, the New York Educational Theatre Association selects several high school students to serve as State Thespian Officers (STOs). The STO represent school theatre students throughout the state of New York and serve as members of the planning committee for the annual New York Educational Theatre Festival!

Benefits of Serving as an STO: State Thespian Officers are nationally recognized as representatives of school theatre in New York State. This type of position is an excellent accolade for college and scholarship applications. Additionally, students may be able to receive community service hours.  Guidelines:

1. STO are required to attend a leadership training workshop and five planning meetings during the school year.
2. STO may also be invited to attend fundraisers, charitable events or promotional events.
3. STO must attend the 2021 New York State Educational Theatre Festival April 2021 at LIU-Brooklyn (however, this year's festival may be entirely virtual, in which case, STO are required to attend online).
4. STO are considered the “face” of New York school theatre. They are expected to be positive role models inside and outside of school. Negative reports from a parent or teacher may result in removal from the board.
Criminal behavior will result in immediate removal from the board.
5. Absences from meetings or deadline extensions must be requested least one week in advance by emailing the STO Coordinator except in the case of emergency or illness. Excused absences include planned vacations, school activities which will affect a grade/good standing, and religious holidays. Three unexcused absences or consistently missed deadlines may result in removal from the board.
