2024 WAKE UP THE EARTH FESTIVAL Volunteer Sign Up

Thank you for your interest in volunteering to help make Spontaneous Celebrations' 46th annual WAKE UP THE EARTH FESTIVAL happen!  Saturday, May 4th, 2024 from 12-6pm in the Southwest Corridor Park near the Stony Brook T station in Boston's Jamaica Plain.

Volunteer the day-of the fest or help us get ready ahead of time! Sign up for one of our volunteer opportunities below or pitch us your own idea on how to get involved.

WAYS TO VOLUNTEER

•Help one Friday Night in April with festival preparations:

We need help on friday nights to help make banners, signage and other tasks to get ready for the festival. Come to Spontaneous Celebrations community center (45 Danforth St. Jamaica Plain) for a couple hours between 6 and 9pm on April 19th or the 26th, or on May 3rd from 4-9pm

•Help put up posters around town in April:

Join our street team and help post our festival flyers and posters around Jamaica Plain, Roxbury and beyond.

• Volunteer the morning of the fest to help with vendor check-in from 9-11:30am:

We will have 6 Vendor Check-in Managers helping direct vendors to their spaces as they arrive. Each manager will be responsible for one section of the fest. You would be assigned to a manager and would help direct vendors to their spots within that area. You would receive a map and a list vendors ahead of time.

•Set up the morning of the fest 8am-11:30am:

Tasks  range from very light to heavy physical labor depending on your capacity. Needs include setting up tables, tents and chairs, setting up our mini golf game, the cardboard slide for kids, “the magic forest”, putting up signage, banners, artwork, etc …

• Carry puppets in the parade from 11:00-12:30pm

Join one of our 2 parades happening in Jamaica Plain from 11am to 12:30pm. You will be handling puppets from moderate to large sizes. We need volunteers who can parade with puppets all the way to the end and be responsible for bringing all puppets over to the junk percussion area after opening circle.

• Be parade marshal from 11am-12:30pm

Help clear the way for the main centre street parade, 2 miles in length, crowd safety and control. 1 advance meeting with parade coordinator on zoom required.

• Take pictures at the festival or on a Friday night in April:

Amateurs and pros are welcome to take pictures of the festival or come and capture the chaos leading up to the festival at one of our Friday nights in April from 6-9pm at the Spontaneous Celebrations community center. Share your pictures with us for promotional purposes and you might find your pictures on our website or Instagram!

•Take a 90 minute shift supervising the cardboard slides during the festival:

Every year we set up an epic cardboard slide for kids on the steep hill next to the basketball courts. We need people to make sure the kids are playing safely.

•Help reduce our waste by sorting compost and trash anytime from 1-6pm

Grab a pair of gloves and join the team, helping us sort through trash from the fest to ensure we are creating as little waste as possible. This will be happening from 1pm-6pm. Come for as long as you'd like.

•Help clean up at end of fest 6pm-8pm:

Every year we strive to leave the park better than we found it. Help pick up trash from the ground. Breakdown tables. Help transport tables/chairs/tents back to Spontaneous Celebrations community center.
