Code of Hammurabi CRQ
In this homework, you will be getting your first taste of the Global CRQ, or Constructed Response Question. This question only has four parts, and isn't as hard as it seems, but sometimes it can seem much harder than it really is. This question is an excellent example of that. I am only having you answer one actual CRQ in this homework (of course, as always, it has four parts) so that we can really break it down, figure it out, and get it right!

FYI: I might grade the actual answer the actual question as a quiz...
Here are the actual TWO DOCUMENTS for this CRQ...
The ACTUAL Constructed Response Question
((Geographic Context- refers to where this historical development/event is taking place and why it is taking place there.))

1. Explain the geographic context for the development of the Babylonian Empire.

2. Using document 2, explain Hammurabi’s purpose for writing the Code of Hammurabi.

((Cause- refers to something that contributes to the occurrence of an event, the rise of an idea, or the bringing about of a development.))

((Effect- refers to what happens as  a consequence (result, impact, outcome) of an event, an idea or a development.))

3. Identify and explain a cause and effect relationship associated with the ideas or events in documents 1 and 2. Be sure to use evidence from both documents 1 and 2 in your response.

Before we go into explaining or clarifying, just from looking at the question, on a scale of 1-5, how well do you understand what it's asking? *

Now, before attempting the question, read over this guide to Constructed Response Questions. It might be a little confusing in parts, and you don't have to follow it exactly in terms of its advice, but more in terms of understanding the structure of the questions and how to approach answering them.
According to the guide, there are three possible themes for the 3rd question. Which of the following is NOT one of them? *
1 point
Here's a good tip on how to answer the CRQs. It's called ACE.
A = Answer the question, make your point
C = Cite specific factual evidence
E = Explain how the evidence proves your point

Now, evidence does not necessarily mean TEXTUAL evidence. If it is asking you something about the document, then you need to give textual evidence, especially in part 3, but otherwise, evidence just means specific facts and examples to support your point.
Now for the question itself. Let's go part by part...
I told you, they are trying to mess with you. Don't let them. You got this. I'll show you...
What empire is represented in the map below? *

In what region is this empire located? (Look at the clues in the map, especially the rivers, and use your prior knowledge) *
What is special about the geography/environment in this region, and what makes it that way? *
So now you should be able to answer OFFICIAL QUESTION #1: Explain the geographic context for the development of the Babylonian Empire. *
((Geographic Context- refers to where this historical development/event is taking place and why it is taking place there.))
Take another look at the document to get some clues as to why Hammurabi created these laws, but also, don't rely ONLY on the document. You should also use your prior knowledge and general understanding of the purpose of laws in general.
I think this one is pretty straightforward so you should be able to answer OFFICIAL QUESTION #2: Using document 2, explain Hammurabi’s purpose for writing the Code of Hammurabi. *
Keep in mind, there can be more than one example you can give for this!
The third part is about causation, and you HAVE TO make some kind of connection from document 1 to document 2. So let's look at document 1 and see if there's anything we missed... HEY! What do the two different colors and the dates represent on this map? What is that saying about the Babylonian Empire during Hammurabi's rule? *
Considering the change you just identified, what additional challenges might a ruler like Hammurabi face? *
Ok so now we just need to make a causal connection between documents 1 and 2. Show a cause and effect! Let's go!
Let's answer OFFICIAL QUESTION #3: Identify and explain a cause and effect relationship associated with the ideas or events in documents 1 and 2. Be sure to use evidence from both documents 1 and 2 in your response.
((Cause- refers to something that contributes to the occurrence of an event, the rise of an idea, or the bringing about of a development.))((Effect- refers to what happens as  a consequence (result, impact, outcome) of an event, an idea or a development.))

I showed you the question at the beginning, but then we went through some clarification and review, and then you had to finally answer it. On a scale of 1-5, how well did you understand it after going through it? *
