Imagine if Lois Lane and Clark Kent (Superman’s mild-mannered alter ego) were having dinner in a nice restaurant. All is going well when suddenly Clark gets a feeling that someone is in trouble. He sees a vision of Lois’ parents talking and crossing a street, unaware of a fast approaching car. Although Lois is fully engaged in conversation, Clark stands up and says, “I’ve got to go.” Lois, feeling cast aside, protests. Pushing up his dark-rimmed glasses, Clark says, “I’ll be right back. It’s to your benefit that I go away.” He’s off to the nearest phone booth to shed his Clark Kent image. Once transformed, he arrives just in time to pick the speeding car up over his head and put it gently back down in time to usher Mr. and Mrs. Lane across the street before they even knew they were in danger. What does this have to do with Small Group Bible Study? This week Pastor Chris began a new sermon series called SuperNatural—a study of the Holy Spirit. In John chapters 13-16, Jesus sits down at a meal with His disciples and says, “I’ve got to go. And it is for your benefitt that I do.”
John 16:5-7— But now I am going away to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you.
Why did Jesus call it “beneficial” for Him to leave?
Who is the Comforter?
What are some of the benefits for having Holy Spirit with us today?
