SUMMER WORKSHOPS

Read, Write, the End
Grades 2nd & 3rd

Read, Write, the End is a reading and writing workshop geared towards incoming 2nd and 3rd graders. Reading instruction at this age is meant to help learners understand story. You'll likely see questions such as: What happens next? And other questions helping them to summarize what they've just read in order of events. Read, Write, the End ask learners to answer the question: What do YOU THINK will happen next? This is where they get to use their creativity to solve the plot, with an emphasis on using the elements from the beginning and the middle of the story, in order to tell their version while staying within the rules of the story universe.

Reflective Journaling
Grades 4th & 5th

The Reflective Journaling workshop asks 4th and 5th grade learners to share their experiences based on the daily prompts provided. We follow up these writings by reading short published personal essays relating to the prompt of the day. From there we compare and contrast and think about how even though we may experience the same things as others, that we all experience them in different ways. We'll also discuss how they would have tried to solve the problem proposed in the personal essays. The purpose of this workshop is to help learners look at their experiences as lessons, no matter how small, and to get them in the habit of reflection through journaling.

LOGISTICS:

Offered bi-weekly from June 7th to June 18th & June 28th to July 23rd
Hours: 10:15am
Days: Monday thru Friday
Format: small group instruction up to 3 students

$365.00 USD

Reading & Research
Grades 6th - 10th

Reading & Research is not as daunting as it probably sounds! It's geared towards 6th - 10th graders. During these years, learners will be asked to relate researched topics to themselves and society at large. Those topics range from biographies of historical figures, analyzing literature and poems, and even the ever so dreaded politics! Learning HOW to research is so beneficial beyond the classroom. As they get older, they'll need to research the best colleges for their interests to the best neighborhoods for their first apartment and find those finds in between the flashy marketing meant to make them forget about the potential cons.

In this workshop we will do a partial reading of The Unteachables by Gordon Kormon, which is told from multiple perspectives, allowing learners to see through the eyes of various characters. We will pair the partial reading with research on different learning styles, ideally helping them identify their own as they continue with their learning journey!

Hours: 2:15 and 3:15
Days: Monday thru Friday
