Stop the Amazon Warehouse on Grand Island!
Stop the Amazon Warehouse on Grand Island!

We stand with the Coalition for Responsible Economic Development for Grand Island (CRED4GI) and all concerned Grand Island residents against the proposed Amazon Warehouse (under the name “Project Olive”). This project would negatively impact Grand Island and the larger Western New York region as a whole.

Amazon's goal is not to invest in our community. Amazon, one of the largest companies in the world, that has seen great profits during the Coronavirus Pandemic and currently has a market value of 1.14 trillion dollars, is negotiating for millions of dollars in tax breaks. We also know from other warehouse locations that Amazon imposed a substantial infrastructural burden on surrounding areas through heavy use of the roads, impacting traffic, safety, and pavement wear.

They’ve promised 1,000 jobs would be created. However, Amazon has also made public commitments to fully automating their warehouses, which would eliminate or make obsolete the jobs they have promised to create. Even if these jobs are not automated, Amazon has frequently been called out for poor and unsafe working conditions. Workers have voiced concerns including: inconsistent length of shifts, inaccessibility by public transportation, and high rates of injuries at facilities. We also know that as Amazon grows they are in fact eliminating jobs. Not only is Amazon pushing many local brick and mortar retailers out of the market, they also employ fewer people to accomplish the same number of sales, thereby decreasing the overall employment numbers.

For these reasons, and many more, we ask that the Grand Island Town Board vote no on rezoning from M1 to PDD and also to make a positive declaration for SEQR.
