How big is publishing "Beyond Publishers", really?
Please help our research by answering to a short questionnaire! (And get a little gift)

We need your input, your observations and your insights for a better understanding of today's dynamic expansion of non-traditional publishing, book distribution and marketing models - when authors successfully find audiences even without at first going to a publisher, or an agent, as the traditional points of entry, and gatekeepers, to the book business.

Publishing "Beyond Publishers" today has become
  • Far more diverse;
  • Much more complex, which means more versatile and customizable, more relevant, but also more challenging to track;
  • Probably bigger than one might expect.
Why is this important?

No concrete numbers are available for most of these offerings. And hardly anything figures in standard book statistics of any sorts.

And yet, the new ways are highly successful in competing for consumers' eyeballs and attention

We therefore ask you 3 questions
  • Which new platforms or channels did you discover lately for narrative content from authors?
  • Where are reading audiences going (if not to a bookshop or an online store)?
  • Make a wild guess how big the those new ways have become!
Here is some context as guidance:

What exactly do we mean by those new models "Beyond Publishers"?
In fact, it's a basket of many entirely different things, like:
  • Self-publishing:
    (like Kindle Direct, but also specialized independent firms proposing quick fixes to authors for creating and promoting books of many different sorts, from simple fan fiction to highly commercial content for specific target audiences);
  • Platform based models:
    (like Wattpad, or like "Webtoon" - serialized, narrative cartoon like content -, and many such platforms are labeled as "studios", as they are integrated with games or video production services);
  • Bestselling authors going DIY (doing it all themselves):
    (like Swiss-French novelist Joel Dicker, or the team behind "Rebel Girls", which started with creating a book for 12 year olds, using branded publishers as simple "service providers", and when this became an international success, turning the whole think into their own "rebel" #platformhttps://www.rebelgirls.com/ ) ;
  • Dedicated audience driven ecosystems:
     (like Berlin based "Tonies", giving 2 to 10 year olds their own, personal story telling universe);
  • Hybrid models:
    With platforms like "Bookouture" serving a big corporate publisher like Hachette as incubator for promising new talent.
And so much more.

- Share a 'ball park' estimate on what those new models add to the general consumer book market in your country (turnover in % - and specify your country);
- Give us a guesstimate figure of turnover for 1 such sub-segment (e.g. how big are 'self-publishing' - or 'writing & reading communities');
- Compare the size of a segment to one of the big global corporate publishing groups.
