Private equity is an alternative form of private financing, away from public markets, in which funds and investors directly invest in companies or engage in buyouts of such companies. This alternative form of financing is not only crucial for private companies but also for the aggregate economy. The value of US PE-related deals doubled to USD 987BN in 2021 whereas the value of PE-deals  in Africa was USD 7.4BN at that time, showing a major difference between the US and the whole continent of Africa. Nevertheless, there are many trends accelerating the growth of the PE-sector in Africa. We are therefore especially happy to shed light on this ongoing development and are pleased to announce our upcoming event about Private Equity in Emerging markets with two outstanding speakers.

The first speaker is Peter Tropper who has more than 35 years of investment and advisory experience in 110 countries in over 200 funds. His guidance is regularly sought by fund managers, institutional investors and policymakers. He has served as a senior advisor to GCPA (formerly the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association) and chair of EMPEA’s Frontier Markets Council. He has been appointed to numerous PE fund advisory committees and teaches at the Wharton MBA School. Peter also teaches “Private Equity in Emerging Markets” and will give us an introduction to this topic.    
The second speaker is Patrick Herrmann who is a Senior Investment Manager at AfricInvest and HSG-Alumni. After finishing his Master’s degree in Banking and Financing at University of St. Gallen and working for Credit Suisse, Patrick joined AfricInvest which is an African focused private equity investor. The fund has raised USD 1.9BN and invested in more than 170 companies in 26 African countries since 1994. He will be able to give us hands-on experience in private equity in emerging markets.
