Hakka Culture in Taiwan - Mountain Road Take Me Home, the Journey of Hakka
It’s hard to describe what “Hakka” is. For us, “Hakka” is the root of tradition and lifestyle.

Our ancestors migrated from north to south China because of wars and famines. They struggled for life and mixed with southern aboriginal people. Finally they moved to Taiwan and created new homeland 200 years ago. It’s a long and dangerous journey.

Taiwan Hakka people are distributed among mountain area where is close to aboriginal people. In the beginning, there were bloody conflicts between Hakka and aboriginal because of reclamation. Now we are all become one family through marriage and business.

Taiwan is a rich island full of diversity of ecology and culture. But we are facing the same challenges of globalization and climate change. We have to change our lifestyle and learn from the past. There are more and more young generation go back hometown to practice ideal life. Hakka Culture conservation and innovation is in progress.
(1) Jojo Jen - National Secretary of Servas Taiwan
I joined Servas Taiwan in 2019. I am a certified nurse aide at the private hospital as well as a therapist of natural remedy. I promotes self-health management and conducts related activities for community seniors in Taiwan. As the new national secretary from April 2022, I wants to make Servas Taiwan more fascinating and more attractive for young people.

Taiwan has a variety of cultures, including 95% Han people (Holo, Hakka & others), 2% aborigines and 2% others. Hakka (20%) is not the majority, but very special one. They have their own language and TV channel. They are tough and diligent, have strong family connection, and always put education as the first priority for children. Our national father Dr. Sun Yat-Sen is Hakka as well. When I was 3, my family lived in Hakka village for 3 years and had a very good memory there. Let's experience what Hakka is on this meeting.

(2)Milly Hsu
I joined Servas Taiwan in 2005. I was born and grew up in Taipei. After married I moved back to countryside, a Hakka village in Miaoli county with my husband, about 100 km, or 90-minute driving distance from Taipei. We decided to give our children happy childhood in nature. Meanwhile my parents came back Hakka hometown after retired. It's not so far from my new home. I often visit them and rediscover the beauty of Hakka village scenery.

On the way to my parents home in 1 hour, we can see wild forests, colorful plants and natural landscape. There's a famous hot spring nearby. It's also not so far from the beach. We can take sea line train and enjoy beautiful sunset.

The most important, "Hakka" is the precious gift my parents gave me. I wish to share it for Servas families all over the world and experience the beauty of Hakka life.

Milly, used to be a reporter in radio, collected sound of nature and Hakka.
(3)Yiping Chen
I Joined Servas in 2014. I am a host and traveler.

My grandmother was a Hakka, but I didn't understand or speak Hakka dialect at all. I had very few conversations with my grandmother, and she passed away when I was 13 years old.

However, I love Hakka food so much. When I enjoy Hakka cuisine, I am always proud that I am a Hakka. This makes me want to know more about Hakka, one part of the roots which I come from. I start to cook Hakka flavor, especially rice dishes, and share with my mother, and ask my family to help me find the connection with my grandmother.

Yiping try to find connections with her grandmother through Hakka cuisine.
(4)Birdy Li
I used to be a reporter in TV and newspaper in Taipei for 7 years. I decided to come back my Hakka hometown when I was 30 years old because of 921 big earthquake in 1999. After coming back home, I started to report local news about my hometown and record traditional Hakka life. Recent years, I am interested in Taiwan aboriginal people's history and culture. I wish to bring about the reconciliation of all people lived in Taiwan. No matter when we come to Taiwan sooner or later, we are all in one family.
Birdy makes his home a Hakka spot and brings people to know Hakka culture.
