April 24, 2024. 10:30am - 4:30 pm reading with reflective interludes on the hour.

Laudato Si Under a Tree: A communal contemplation, a common text to guide us, and a clock ticking.

tUrn will feature a public reading of this complete document outdoors on the campus of SCU over a 6-hour period on Wednesday April 24 and is looking for 24 readers to each read for 20 minutes.

If you are familiar with the event, scroll down and kindly fill out the form!

BACKGROUND:

tUrn began in fall 2019 inspired by the first papal encyclical Laudato Si' - On the Care for our Common Home. This fall Pope Francis offers an update to this document that accounts for the intensifying climate crisis. Dubbed ‘Laudato Si 2.0," it is set to be released Oct. 4, 2023, on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

In this critical update, Francis retains much of the message of the original document, but has also rebuked “obstructionist” climate doubters and accused politicians of listening more to oil industry interests than Scripture, common sense or the cries of the poor.

Why are we reading this several times over a 6 hour period?
Scientists have predicted we have only six years left to control some part of the outcomes of current trends in global warming and climate crisis. Some think we have fewer than six before even more tipping points are passed, a few think we have more time. Some say it is too late.  That does not mean the world is ending after this decade.  It just means that every move we make in steering in a new direction might matter more now than if we decide we care enough to act ten years from now.

What is the commitment?
Readers or groups will sign up for a one-hour slot, and read for 20 MINUTES.
You will receive an email within a week confirming your 20 MINUTE READING SLOT.

Take your tUrn as you are able... your voice is welcome and needed. Listening more, the hope is we will understand the need for a concerted, educated solidarity in environmental justice, informed activism, climate action, divestment, and investment in world, people and species-saving, communal, relationship-building.

Student participants please return at 7pm the same night, to the same place, to reflect on the experience together and do an hour of climate action led by tUrn interns. Thank you so much for your participation.
