For Hong Kong students the United Kingdom is a perennially attractive higher education destination. With more than 150 universities and hundreds of other higher education institutions, the UK has always been popular for oversea studies. Hong Kong is the UK’s second largest international applicant pool after mainland China. So what do you need to know before you get started? What are the key things to know, the pitfalls to avoid and how can you make your application stand out?

About Our Speaker:

Originally from the UK, Alethea Bleyberg grew up as a third culture kid on the campuses of international schools in the Netherlands as the daughter of international educators. After completing her studies, she started her career in international education in Beijing. She has since worked in international schools in Hong Kong for over a decade as a teacher of epistemology, English language and literature, life skills, research and academic writing skills and careers education. She was a member of the senior school leadership team at the ISF Academy for five years as Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay coordinator, Master Teacher, and as a member of the university guidance department with responsibility for Oxbridge applications. She was also a member of the high school leadership team as the IB Diploma Coordinator and Academic Board member at ISS Singapore. She has also worked as a consultant on the IB Diploma Core components to international schools including the French International School in Hong Kong and the John F. Kennedy American School of Queretaro, Mexico. She is also an examiner and a member of the curriculum review team for the International Baccalaureate. She writes regularly on education issues for publications for parents and educators, has been a guest on several education podcast episodes and has presented at international education conferences. Her interests in education include how to prepare students with skills that are essential for academic success in higher education and life. She holds an MA in Social and Political Sciences and an MPhil in Modern Society and Global Transformations from Cambridge University, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Advanced Educational Studies (PGCAES) in Careers Education and Counselling from Hong Kong University. She also has a PGCE in secondary English and a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).
