Salem Returns: Reopening Information Questionnaire for PreK-12 Student Learning in 2020-21 (Please complete one form per child)
Dear Parent and/or Guardian

The Salem School Committee approved the district's reopening plan on Monday, August 10, 2020. A key feature of our plan was having the ability to "flex," if needed, should the local health indicators related to COVID-19 change. On Wednesday August 12, changes in the local data prompted the district to shift its plan to start the year with all students learning via our remote learning platform. Going forward, our reopening plan will extend the features described in the Gr 4-12 original plan, to all grade levels (PreK-12). As such, our reopening plan is as follows:

1. The foundation of instruction for the coming year will be remote learning.

2. Students will have daily or weekly schedules that include both live instruction and recorded teaching that provides a full day of instruction each day.

3. Students will have the option to come to school once a week for in-person connecting activities in “The Hub - Connects” for small group, outdoor social emotional supports.

4. Prioritized students will have the option to come to “The Hub - Labs” for in-person support for their remote learning and to receive targeted small group instruction. If your student falls into a prioritized group, you will receive an invitation from your child’s school in the next week.

For additional details on the plan, please visit: https://www.salemlearns.org/salem-returns/

In order to successfully plan for the year, we need some information from you! We are asking all families to review this information carefully and choose the best responses for your child. Please indicate your preference below BY FRIDAY AUGUST 21, 2020.

Note: Please complete ONE FORM PER CHILD.

We look forward to learning of your choices and welcoming your child/ren back to school this fall.

Sincerely,

Dr. Stephen Zrike
Superintendent

(2) Remote learning each day, but your child will not participate in in-person “Hub - Connects” activities.

(3) Other - A different school or district that is not associated with the Salem Public Schools (NOTE: YOUR CHILD WOULD BE WITHDRAWN FROM YOUR CURRENT SCHOOL AND DISTRICT)

We know that remote learning is disruptive for all families, and can create significant financial hardship by impacting employment or the need to pay for childcare. Salem Public Schools recognizes this need and is exploring opportunities to try to support our families. The following questions ask you about your child care needs for the upcoming year.
Salem Public Schools may have some very limited capacity to extend the invitation to a limited number of students to participate in on-site "Learning Hubs" at no cost to families. "Learning Hubs" would provide supervision for your child to participate in remote learning for the length of the school day in a school setting with SPS staff. Academic instruction would be delivered remotely, however an on-site facilitator (not necessarily a teacher) would support your child's learning. Would you like your child to be considered should there be capacity for this at your school? (Note: If remote learning does not create a significant hardship for your family, we ask that you not request this support).

Salem Public Schools is exploring working with our partners to provide a low cost child care option that would support remote learning and may take place in our school buildings. This option would be available at some cost to families, and SPS is working to subsidize that cost where possible. Would you be interested in a low cost child care option for your student with one of our partners?

Part of our plan includes a "checkpoint" in November to reassess the local data and determine if any changes need to be made. Should the local COVID-19 related data improve by that time, would you be inclined to want your child to experience more in-person learning? *
Part 2: Access to Technology (Please complete one form for each child).
Please share some information to help us understand your technology capacity and needs.
Does your child have a Salem Public Schools Chromebook at home? *
Is the Chromebook operating properly?
If your child does not have a Salem Public Schools Chromebook at home, do you have another device that your child could use until the district is able to provide you with one? (Note: We have orders in to support all students, however we must prioritize distribution to families without devices at the beginning of the year given that some of our orders are on backorder.)
Does your student(s) need an SPS Chromebook in order to begin the school year?                                     (Note: We have orders in to support all students, however we must prioritize distribution to families without devices at the beginning of the year given that some of our orders are on backorder.) *
