"We are faced not with two separate crises, one environmental and the other social, but rather with one complex crisis which is both social and environmental. Strategies for a solution demand an integrated approach to combating poverty, restoring dignity to the excluded, and at the same time protecting nature." -Pope Frances, Laudato Si' (#139)
Think of it as an 8-hour contemplative prayer that invites your listening and your voice at any moment....
For the upcoming tUrn week April 18-22 the Laudato Si reading takes place at the center of the week, on Wednesday, from Noon to 8:00 PM in person, under the tree next to Walsh Hall and also on-line.
READERS in SPRING 2022 will need to be ON CAMPUS.
Why 8 hours?
Scientists have predicted we have only eight years left to control some part of the outcomes of current trends in global warming and climate crisis. Some think we have fewer than eight before even more tipping points are passed, a few think we have more. Some say it is too late. That does not mean the world is ending after this decade. It just means that every move we make in steering in a new direction actually matters more now that we have awareness of the climate emergency than it might ever matter in the future.
The future is absolutely depending on us making a u-turn, and that means doing it justly.
What is the commitment?
Readers or groups will sign up for a one-hour slot, and read for 20 MINUTES.
You will receive an email within a week confirming your 20 MINUTE READING SLOT.
Readers may sit, or stand, or move around. They will come into the space 20 minutes early, be directed by the stage manager to locate which paragraph we are in in the 88 page text, follow along, and be given a 1 minute ready cue.
Start times are on the hour, 20 minutes after the hour, and 40 minutes after the hour.
A communal contemplation, a common text to guide us, and a clock ticking.
Take your tUrn as you are able... your voice is welcome and needed. Listening more, the hope is we will understand the need for a concerted, educated solidarity in environmental justice, climate action and communal relationship-building.
Thank you so much for your participation.
