Massachusetts Sierra Club Political Committee Application
About the Committee
The Massachusetts Chapter's volunteer Political Committee is responsible for identifying and supporting candidates for public office primarily at the state and local level who are expected to best represent the goals of the Sierra Club on environmental issues and legislation. The Committee solicits, reviews, and votes on proposed endorsements. Endorsement decisions are then confirmed by the Chapter's Executive Committee. The Political Committee also sets priorities for chapter efforts on endorsed campaigns. The chapters supports its endorsed candidates by providing a seal of approval and, when able, by directly supporting our top candidates. The four main goals of the Committee are:
To preserve the environment through grassroots, bipartisan, political action.
To elect environmentally supportive candidates.
To advance the Sierra Club’s legislative program.
To influence the behavior of public officials.

At minimum, we ask that members attend the monthly meeting and actively participate in decision making. We need a quorum of current members to vote, so it's essential that folks attend. Besides that, members can contribute at a level that makes sense for them. We often break up into small teams of 2-3 and each team tackles a small piece of the work. Our work generally falls along a schedule that aligns with the state’s election cycle:
Updating our materials and planning (January - March)
Research and outreach to candidates (March - August)
Helping our candidates get elected (August - November)

Some members also help with fundraising for Sierra Club's PAC.

Thank you for your interest in being part of this powerful, volunteer-led political process! Someone will be in touch by the beginning of April.
