VIP: Volunteers for Indian People
The overall goal of the VIP: Volunteers for Indian People Program is to provide service of the highest quality to assist Oklahoma City Indian Clinic with its mission: Providing excellent health care to American Indians. Volunteers fill a variety of changing needs and help to create a friendly, caring climate thereby enriching the entire Oklahoma City Urban Indian community. You will be part of a qualified and culturally sensitive health professional team that provides comprehensive health services to the Oklahoma City Urban Indian community.

OKCIC values its volunteers for their important contributions to patients and staff. Staff members are grateful for volunteer assistance and appreciate their energy, enthusiasm and dedication. The Clinic benefits from the community insight volunteers bring and from the information about illness, treatment and clinic goals volunteers take back to the community.

General Statement of Policy
Oklahoma City Indian Clinic will ensure the competency of all new volunteers. Volunteers will not have access to protected health information (PHI).
Definition
A volunteer shall be considered as any individual who assists with work done at the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic, without compensation.
Procedure for Executive Volunteers
Executive volunteers will be used at an administrative level for the Clinic in roles such as administrative help, guest speaker at events, guest writers for publications, or staff training.

1. Executive volunteers should apply through the Communications and Events Director and submit a current resume or curriculum vitae, current photo, volunteer information sheet, and a Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Certification to Comply with Medical Marijuana policy and Confidentiality Agreement for volunteers.

2. Executive volunteers will be contacted by the Communications and Events Director as needed for Clinic programs or events.
Procedure for Large Event or "Peak Time" Volunteers
Peak Time volunteers will be used at any large event held by the Clinic, such as: Walk for Wellness, Red Feather Gala, TURTLE Camp and Warm & Fuzzy Committee events such as annual coat drive, Thanksgiving basket giveaway and toy giveaway.  “Peak time” volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.

1. All large event or “peak time” volunteers should contact the  Communications and Events Director and must complete the following: 
a. Volunteer information sheet
b. Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Confidentiality Agreement
c. Certification to Comply with Medical Marijuana policy.
d. Indian Health Service Sexual Abuse Prevention training: https://www.ihs.gov/sexualabuseprevention/training/

2. Adults (18 years or older) must sign a release for a criminal  background check and complete a drug screen before volunteering for TURTLE Camp or other youth programs. These screenings will be processed by Human Resources and the Clinic will pay for this expense.

3. Once a volunteer has submitted the necessary paperwork and been approved, the Communications and Events Director will contact the volunteer to discuss current Clinic programs or events.
Procedure for Health Promotion Disease Prevention (HPDP) “Junior” Volunteers
Junior volunteers are between the ages of 13 and 17, and  may volunteer as mentors in the TURTLE Camp program

1. All Junior volunteers will be referred to the HPDP Manager to be considered for TURTLE Camp mentoring. They must complete a volunteer information sheet, a Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) agreement for volunteers and a Certification to Comply with Medical Marijuana policy.

2. Approved Junior volunteers will be contacted by the HPDP Manager to discuss volunteer opportunities.
