SMP is proud to offer an evening program for our neighborhood's middle school instrumentalists! We are looking for adult volunteers who can provide small group support to these 6/7/8 grade students during their 90-minute evening sessions with SMP staff and Teaching Artists.  

We're looking for volunteers who have:  
1. Strong music skills and the capacity to instruct intermediate band/orchestra students
2. A passion for working with youth
3. Strong communication skills
4. An interest in building community with staff, students, and other volunteers
5. No prior teaching experience necessary, but a commitment to growth and critique is a must

MSMP band and orchestra meet separately from 6:30-8:00 PM on Wednesdays throughout the school year at Yesler Community Center. Both groups will enjoy a 40-minute sectional, a 10-minute snack break, and a 40-minute rehearsal with their whole group. Volunteers who play any band or orchestra instrument simply play along, offer advice, help boost confidence, offer technique tips, and assist as needed throughout the session.

Requirements:

The goal of our volunteering program is to engage and inspire MSMP students to continue on their musical journey. We expect our volunteers to be positive role models and mentors. In order for our volunteers to be well-prepared, safe, and effective in their role we require that volunteers:

1. Complete their application materials in full by the listed deadline.
2. Have consistent attendance – 3 unexcused absences is grounds for dismissal from the program.
3. Give clear/advance communication about scheduling and any conflicts.
4. Read and reply to emails or phone calls from program staff.
5. Comply with rules regarding conduct in community centers and safe supervision of students.
6. Be 18 or older.
7. Ensure that 2 letters of recommendation are submitted before beginning to volunteer. (Please have the name, email and phone number of your two recommenders ready to submit at the end of this application. Returning volunteers are exempt from this requirement.)
