Designed as a platform for cross-disciplinary interactions, the general seminar in gender studies encourages collaboration among researchers from various Sciences Po research centers and units addressing gender-related issues. Every two months, a publication or work in progress is presented and discussed during these sessions. This session is co-organised with Sciences Po's Centre for International Studies (CERI).
April 4, 2024, 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM: “Transitioning at the Borders: the Diasporic, Migration and Travel Narratives of Transpinays”
— presentation by
Brenda Rodriguez Alegre, Visiting Professor at CERI - Sciences Po and UPCité, Lecturer in the Gender Studies Programme at the University of Hong Kong.
Abstract: Transpinays or transgender women in the Philippines may be very visible and active voices across various platforms locally yet in the absence of anti-discrimination laws, gender recognition laws and other queer protective and recognising laws, remain among the most marginalised and oppressed. Over the years, transpinays had varying experiences across the diaspora, migrations and traveling. This presentation provides some overview of these particular experiences of transpinays and their challenges when crossing borders, from intrusive interrogations, to violative practices and the likelihood of violence in various contexts.
