PREreview / Center for Open Science User Survey

Peer review plays a critical role in the credibility of scholarly communications, and has been identified as one limitation to the uptake of preprints as scholarly publications. By creating a workflow for preprints to be reviewed by the experts from the peer community, credibility and trust in the preprint is improved.

We are interested in learning your thoughts on an integration of preprint platforms with crowdsourcing peer review platforms such as PREreview to better facilitate this workflow.

Our survey goals:
- Gather interest for an integration of preprints to review by preprint users
- Learn how likely you would be to request reviews of preprints
- Learn about additional needs for this integration

ABOUT US
PREreview is an open project that aims at bringing more diversity to peer review. We build open infrastructure for the crowdsourcing of community reviews of preprints, train early-career researchers in peer review, and host inclusive events for the collaborative and constructive review of preprints. We operate under the fiscal sponsorship of the non-profit organization Code for Science and Society. Visit prereview.org/about to learn more.

ABOUT COS
The Center for Open Science (COS) is a non-profit technology and culture change organization founded in 2013 with a mission to increase openness, integrity, and reproducibility of scientific research. COS pursues this mission by building communities around open science practices, supporting metascience research, and developing and maintaining free, open source software tools. Visit cos.io to learn more.

IMPORTANT: We want to tell you about how we will handle your data. This is important to make sure you can give meaningful consent to participate. It’s okay if you don’t want to read all of this information, but we want it to be available to you.

DATA COLLECTION
This survey collects the following personal information

- Your career level/professional role
- Demographics such as gender identity*, ethnicity*, geographical location*
- Information about your research and research habits
- Details about your experiences interacting with preprints and preprints reviews

*At the core of PREreview's mission is to bring new voices to the peer review system. The reason why we think it's important to collect basic information around your identity is for us to ensure we hear as many different perspectives as possible. You will, however, have the option to not answer those questions.

DATA HANDLING
The PREreview and COS teams will process these data to inform an integration of PREreview functionalities onto OSF Preprints and other preprint servers supported by COS.

We will not sell, rent, or release data gathered as part of this project to any entity. In particular, we will not share personal or identifying information with any entity for any purpose.

DATA STORAGE
The data collected here is (obviously) collected using Google Forms.

We process and store data on Google Drive. Our Google accounts are protected using 1) passwords and 2) two-factor authentication.

We use Google Calendar to manage events and appointments.

Our email is through Gmail.
