What is the AMC 8 contest?

"The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development of problem-solving skills. The AMC 8 provides an opportunity for middle school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers. Students apply classroom skills to unique problem-solving challenges in a low-stress and friendly environment."

"The material covered on the AMC 8 includes topics from a typical middle school mathematics curriculum. Possible topics include but are not limited to: counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry including the Pythagorean Theorem, spatial visualization, everyday applications, and reading and interpreting graphs and tables. In addition some of the later questions may involve linear or quadratic functions and equations, coordinate geometry, and other topics traditionally covered in a beginning algebra course."

To help cover the costs of administering the contests, we are charging $20 for each participant. If this is a financial burden, please request a need-based fee reduction.

AMC Contest Protocols
The AMC Contest(s) at Bard College will be administered in-person in a paper and pencil format. 

Permitted Materials: During the competition, students are only allowed: writing utensils, blank scratch paper, rulers, erasers

Prohibited materials include: calculators, smartwatches, phones, computing devices, compasses, protractors, and graph paper.

You may not register to take the AMC 8 contest.

AMC Contest problems and solutions are not to be discussed in any online or public forum, via phone, email, or digital media of any type until after the competition period has ended. That is January 24 for the AMC 8 contest.

Activity Consent for Children under 18 Years of Age
Bard College requires that you agree to the following for your child to participate in any Bard College-affiliated activity. As the parent or guardian, I hereby authorize my child to participate in AMC 8 Math Contest with the Bard Math Circle, on January 21, 2023 or January 22, 2023 in case of inclement weather. I further release Bard College, its directors, officers, employees, students, agents, representatives, or affiliates, from any and all liability caused in whole or in part by anyone affiliated with Bard College, or from any other cause whatsoever, that results in bodily injury or personal injury or a data breach suffered by above-named minor participant and for any loss or loss of use or damage to personal property owned by said participant or family member, or any other damage or injury that may result due to the above named minor’s visit or use of Bard College facilities during this activity. I further understand that all Bard College employees, including faculty, staff, and volunteers involved in said Bard Math Circle will exercise reasonable care and act responsibly while conducting activities. Moreover, I understand that Bard College does not provide health insurance for students during their participation in the Bard Math Circle. Health insurance is the sole responsibility of the child’s parent(s) or guardian(s).

The Bard Math Circle is hosting the AMC Contests as a math enrichment opportunity for students, and is charging a $20 fee to help defer costs. Your registration is not complete until we have received payment.

Cancellation Policy
If you must cancel, we will refund 50% of the registration fee.
COVID Policy
The Bard College community is more than 99% vaccinated against COVID-19 and is currently in a mask friendly mode. To help maintain the safety of the Bard College community and the contest participants, the following policy currently applies to both students participating in the AMC contests and all individuals (including siblings, friends, and parents/adults) who accompany them. 
  • Each individual must be fully vaccinated: please send in proof of vaccination status.
  • Anyone who is symptomatic must stay home.
  • During the activities, regardless of vaccination status, everyone must stay masked at all times.
