The "ELC Career Talk" is one of the many professional development series under the "ELC Critical Conversations" initiative. The purpose of the "ELC Career Talk" particularly is to share tips and resources with ELC students and alumni on how to navigate the academic job market in current times.

Typically, academic institutions will start their searches in Fall by posting the job vacancies and using conferences like AESA and UCEA to recruit so that the interviews can take place in Spring. So, in this second part of the "ELC Career Talk" series, we will talk about what happens behind the scenes during a search, including the typical processes search committees follow to narrow down candidates and decide on who to offer positions.

Facilitators:

Dr. Kathy Hytten, ELC Professor, has served on many search committees over the past 25 years, and has chaired several recent faculty searches at UNCG.

Nor Othman-LeSaux, ELC Office Manager, has served on search committees as well and have 10 years of HR experience covering searches, appointments, reappointments, promotions, separations, etc. for faculty, staff, temporary employees (lecturers and staff), graduate, and undergraduate student hires.

About this session:

We will be sharing information that might help answer some of your burning questions as to what happens behind the scenes when a search takes place. These may include questions such as "What materials should I include in my application packet?" "What do current faculty look for in a potential colleague?" "I've submitted my application. It has been 6 months. Why have I not heard from them?" or "What is the difference between an adjunct and a part-time lecturer?" We assume you will also bring your own questions to the session as well.
