The WV Council for the Social Studies is hosting our summer conference on June 13-14, 2024 at Ripley High School in Ripley, WV.
Thursday, June 13th will be a day to learn about history in the field. We will meet at the Jackson County Courthouse (Court Street Steps) at 11 AM for a walking tour of downtown Ripley, followed by lunch on your own, a movie about the last public hanging in West Virginia History in the historic Alpine Theater, and a tour of the Great Bend Museum in Ravenswood WV. Please feel friend your spouse/partner on this exciting day of historical programming.
On Thursday evening, we are hosting a special dinner at the Historic Starcher Mansion. The menu and cost are posted below. Choose the lodging of your choice in the Ripley area and don't forget about the comfortable rooms at McCoy's Inn in Ripley, the cute Ravenswood Inn Bed and Breakfast and Holt Lodge at Cedar Lakes Conference Center. Lodging within Ripley city limits includes the Holiday Inn Express, the Super 8, and the recently remodeled Quality Inn.
This year's conference to be teacher driven and teacher focused. We are planning for 3 distinct tracts of presentations.
1. West Virginia History 2. American History/Civics 3. World History/Geography
Friday, June 14th sessions will be held at Ripley High School in Ripley, WV. Our common meeting space will be in the Ripley High School Library. It is located at the back of the school behind the football field and the main building. We will begin at promptly at 8:30 AM, please register between 8-8:15 AM so you have time to find a seat. We will end at 4 PM after our business meeting/awards.
Please bring the following things with you:
1. water bottle/cup,
2. a lanyard for your name tag,
3. an American/World/West Virginia History Book you've read and enjoyed to place in our first WVCSS Book Exchange. This will be like a Christmas Gift Exchange but for a new, free book to read!
