2021 WSU Juneteenth Celebration: Virtually Volunteer with Brilliant Detroit
Join the inaugural celebration of Juneteenth at WSU by volunteering with Brilliant Detroit on June 17th at 5pm!

Engaging with the history of Black Bottom, and working with local youth, volunteers will facilitate activities that introduce Alice Randall's Black Bottom Saints playing cards. Volunteers can attend a brief training session prior to the event which is scheduled for June 15th from 5-6pm. This session will include tips on engaging with students virtually, a history of Black Bottom and introduce the playing cards.

Volunteers are requested to pick up their own deck of playing cards at Brilliant Detroit to participate fully (if you are unable to pick them up arrangements can be made).

Details for the event
Prior to the event, participating families will receive the playing cards in advance. On the day of the event, staff will provide a short orientation to youth joining. This will include introducing the playing cards and a brief history of Black Bottom. After the orientation, small groups of 3-6 participating youth will be placed in Zoom breakout rooms with a WSU volunteer to engage in activities using the playing cards.

Activities may include a scavenger hunt, matching and association games, and/or traditional card games. We may also have students create their own cards in the style of a Black Bottom Saints card using a template. A document will be sent to families with additional games to play at home.
