2024 Outstanding Service Awards Nomination Form
Background

The Minnesota Justice Foundation (MJF) Outstanding Service Awards were established in 1991 to recognize our colleagues who have demonstrated a commitment to public interest legal work. MJF offers these awards in recognition of the dedicated service and outstanding achievements of students, lawyers in private or corporate practice working on pro bono matters, and public interest legal service providers. Each recipient will be recognized at MJF’s Awards Celebration on October 9th, 2024.

Award Categories

Law Student Volunteer Awards (three, awarded to one student from each of the three Minnesota law schools): This award is presented to three law students who have demonstrated a sincere interest in providing free legal services as evidenced by substantial volunteer work, including activities in the client or legal communities, and law school work going beyond the minimum requirements for academic credit. To be eligible for this award, nominees must be enrolled in law school for the Fall 2024 semester.

Private Practice Lawyer Award: This award is presented to an attorney in private practice or corporate in-house practice who has demonstrated a commitment to providing pro bono legal representation and/or working on access to justice issues. The awards committee may consider direct client representation or other activities that impact the delivery of these services.

Direct Legal Service Award: This award is presented to a paid staff attorney at a legal services provider who has demonstrated leadership in the provision of free legal services to clients with low incomes. Recipients must have demonstrated commitment to provision of zealous and skilled legal representation for low-income clients. The awards committee may consider direct client representation, work in support of direct client representation, and other activities in the client or legal communities.

Advocate Award: This award is presented to an advocate (non-attorney) or pro bono coordinator who has demonstrated a commitment to providing pro bono legal representation and/or to increasing access to justice for all. The awards committee may consider direct client services or other activities that impact the communities the program supports.

Nominations

Anyone can nominate a candidate for any of the above award categories. MJF encourages law students; volunteer supervisors; law school, legal aid, and law firm staff; attorneys; and other justice partners to nominate candidates for the Outstanding Service Awards. MJF values hearing from a diverse pool of voices about the public interest legal work happening in our community.
