When teachers learn that Voice and Choice is one of the essential design elements of PBL, they often assume that this is mostly true for older students. They often believe that young learners (ages 3-8) benefit from constant teacher control and a tightly planned project rather than recognizing they can make important decisions to guide their learning. This cannot be further from the truth. From generating “Need to Know” questions, to children suggesting ways to explore and investigate, to students offering ideas for how to share their learning in a public product, young children must have opportunities for agency and independence through all phases of a project. In this session, we will explore these ideas in-depth, empowering teachers of our youngest learners to include plenty of opportunities for Voice and Choice in every project.

We often hear that we, as teachers must “give students a voice.” This is inaccurate. We don’t give students a voice. Every child has a voice. Our job is to create learning environments where children are encouraged and supported to make their voices heard, no matter what age.  Facilitated by Sara Lev, Amanda Clark, and Erin Starkey.

“We Want a PBL Learning Community!” You asked for it, you got it!

PBLers - both new and experienced, have been asking for a way to stay connected this year as most of us will likely be embarking upon some type of digital PBL journey with our students. We know this is daunting and can feel lonely. PBLMatters is proud to create a FREE PBL PLC (professional learning community) series to help you be successful. Our goal is to connect you with PBL experts in the field and to establish a community of fellow PBL teachers that can routinely meet and share questions, solutions, and strategies.  Each PBL PLC session will have a specialized topic and begin with an introduction by a featured guest speaker with time for Q/A and breakout sessions with other teachers. Our plan is to create an ongoing series of PBL PLC convenings. Stay tuned to see an offering about every 2 weeks.  Please share these FREE PBL PLC opportunities with your colleagues!
