Japanese American Legacy Lawyers, a program that pays homage to past and present attorneys of Japanese heritage who have contributed to bettering the lives of Japanese Americans and all Americans will be hosted by Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM), Embassy of Japan to the United States in Washington DC, Koichi Ai. The attorneys to be recognized will be Shirley Ann Higuchi, Stuart Ishimaru, Erika Moritsugu and Judge Raymond Uno (in absentia).
Opening remarks will be made by DCM Koichi Ai, and Phil Tajitsu Nash, Co-President of the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) and a longtime teacher of Asian American Studies at the University of Maryland, will give a brief overview of the contributions of Japanese American attorneys such as William Marutani, Minoru Yasui, Rose Ochi, Frank Chuman, Kathryn and Lorraine Bannai, Dale Minami, Peggy Nagae, and others. Nash will then introduce and engage Legacy Lawyers Erika Mortsugu, Stuart Ishimaru and Shirley Ann Higuchi in a fireside chat about past, present and future issues facing the Japanese American community.
A special recognition will be given in absentia to Judge Raymond Uno of Utah, who cannot attend the event but who has had a long and distinguished career as a judge, civil rights activist, and community leader. There will also be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions.
The event is free and open to the public at the Japan Information & Cultural Center. Light refreshments will be served. For planning purposes, please RSVP by Monday, October 30, 2023.
