WHEN AND WHERE
SZ4D is an initiative to investigate the processes that underlie subduction zone hazards (
www.sz4d.org). The work envisioned for SZ4D will involve considerable fieldwork and provides the opportunity to reimagine many aspects of geoscience field activities.
This workshop is being held to identify the physical and human infrastructure needs to support SZ4D field geoscience.
This in-person, one-day workshop will take place at the Hyatt Regency next to the the Denver Convention Center on the Saturday October 8th, immediately preceding the fall Geological Society of America national meeting. The workshop will take place from 9 am to 5 pm. Coffee, snacks, and lunch will be provided.
Applications are due Sept 9.
MOTIVATION AND GOALS
There is limited community infrastructure to support field data collection. Such support is required to collect the large-scale data needed to answer SZ4D research questions, to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and to accelerate the pace of research reliant on field data. The community has expressed needs for: 1) Support for logistical coordination, travel, and instrumentation. 2) Facilities and support for local sample processing and analysis. 3) Management of hazardous activities and emergency situations. 4) Facilitation of the collection, archival, and distribution of publicly available data and samples. 5) Facilitation of respectful communication and interaction with local stakeholders.
At this workshop, SZ4D seeks input from the scientific community to discuss the needs, opportunities, and challenges in developing a community-based field program, and the infrastructure needed to support such a program.
A draft of the Implementation Plan for SZ4D can be found at https://www.sz4d.org/projects-3, and Chapter 2 describes the driving science questions of the 3 scientific working groups.
Please see the SZ4D workshop website for additional information on workshop format and goals.

FUNDING AND REIMBURSEMENT
There is a limited amount funding available from NSF to offset the costs for SZ4D Field Deployment workshop participants. We anticipate being able to cover the cost of one hotel night for each participant, and will likely be able to offer additional travel support for attendees. Participants will book their own travel and lodging, and request reimbursement from SZ4D. Funding will be prioritized for early career scientists.
The SZ4D is committed to fostering the exchange of ideas and is dedicated to maintaining a safe, productive, and welcoming environment for all participants, no matter their function or their background. This includes respectful treatment of everyone. All participants are required to abide by the
SZ4D Code of Conduct.
