EDSP 660: Building Capacity for Inclusive Education in Public Schools Interest Form
The Virginia Department of Education, in partnership with Radford University’s Special Education Program Area and the Virginia Inclusive Practices Center is offering a 3-credit special topics course to increase the capacity of licensed school educators,  administrators, and other school personnel in school divisions to support an inclusive philosophy and implement effective inclusive practices. The course is a compressed hybrid (asynchronous/synchronous) online course for up to 50 Virginia public school administrators during Summer II, June 24-July 27, 2024.

The course is designed to address aspects of the Virginia Department of Education’s (VDOE) Statewide Inclusion Action Plan, which specifically aims to increase:
  • the quality of the instructional practices for students with disabilities in general education settings;
  • access for students with disabilities, preschool through graduation, who need significant supports to be engaged in instruction and socialization in settings with typically developing peers;
  • the capacity of parents and school leadership to work together in building and maintaining inclusive schools; and
  • the capacity in school divisions to provide ongoing professional development and support to schools’ for maintaining an inclusive philosophy and implementing effective practices.
The cost of applying to Radford University as a non-degree seeking student, tuition for the course, and textbooks will be at no cost to the participants.

We are accepting interest form submissions until all slots are filled. Space is limited to 50 participants, with a minimum of three applicants from a school or school division.  School divisions that qualify are those not meeting State Performance Plan Indicator 5 goals for the percentage of time spent in general education settings for students with disabilities. We will begin contacting potential applicants starting May 6, 2024. After June 1, 2024, any slots remaining will be awarded with geographic and division distribution consideration.  This form will remain open until all 50 slots are filled. Those eligible to apply must be licensed administrators employed in a Virginia public elementary, middle, high school, or division-wide role. Applicants selected will receive email notifications regarding acceptance and the application form process. If you do not receive notice, you will be placed on a waiting list and if space opens up, we will reach out to you.

Applicants must submit the following:
  1. The Participant Interest Form must be completed by interested individuals online.
  2. An application to Radford University as a Non-Degree Seeking Student must be completed for enrollment to take place.  The application fee of $25 will be paid by the grant. Do not pay the application fee. Do not start the application until you are notified that you have been accepted to apply. The accepted nominees will be notified by the Radford University grant staff.  Additional directions and assistance will be provided to participants for applying  as a non-degree seeking student and registering for the course.
