We, the undersigned, are writing to you as students, staff, and alumni of the University of Oxford, in solidarity with the graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, tutors, and stipendiary lecturers who teach for the Collegiate University.

Tutorials are at the heart of Oxford’s “world leading” undergraduate teaching. Many of the academic workers who deliver this teaching are severely underpaid. Once the hours spent preparing sessions, marking work, and completing the associated administrative tasks are factored in, many are earning significantly less than the Oxford Living Wage of £10.31.

The lack of predictable working hours, secure contracts, and transparent systems for allocating teaching work, all contribute to the precarity and uncertainty that these tutors face. The petition calls on the collegiate University to provide paid training, fair pay and contracts for the casualised staff who teach undergraduates across Oxford colleges. At present, this work is underpaid and precarious - a situation that benefits neither tutors nor their students.

The petition is here: https://forms.gle/PKydkgxVc4cG8Y76A
We urge you to contact the Oxford UCU branch to discuss these issues further.

If you would like to sign on behalf of a group, society or campaign, then please email us at oxfordanticas@gmail.com

If you are a postgraduate student, postdoc, tutor, or stipendiary lecturer who teaches undergraduate students for the Collegiate University, you can sign Oxford UCU's petition here: https://forms.gle/PKydkgxVc4cG8Y76A

While the central University recognises trades unions, Oxford’s constituent colleges do not. Although this means UCU cannot collectively bargain with colleges, we can and frequently do offer guidance and support to members who are employed on college-only contracts. If you are an enrolled PhD student who is also contracted to teach at the higher education institution at which you are registered for your PhD studies, we offer free membership for up to four years.
