Undergrad Solidarity with TSSU (Emailing for Academic Concessions)
According to an email from SFU dated 20 June 2023, it is part of students' responsibilities to inform their course instructor if they are choosing not to cross picket lines and to seek academic concessions if they are not able to fulfill course requirements (including class participation, etc.) because they do not want to cross picket lines. Many undergrads do not know this and most assume that they will not be granted academic concessions, thus choosing to cross picket lines. In order to reduce the number of undergrads who cross picket lines because of this, supportive undergrads can email our Profs / Instructors in advance, seeking academic concessions and requesting that they notify the whole class that they will provide academic concessions in support of the strike. This is VITAL because TSSU cannot email undergrads -- so if we can get Instructors to email whole classes on our behalf, we can reach many undergrads AND address the main concern undergrads have, about how this might impact their grades.

Email title: Urgent Enquiry about Academic Concessions on Picket Days

Dear Prof <>,

I am <>, a student in <insert course code here>. I am emailing to enquire about whether you will be granting academic concessions for <class participation, quiz, etc> which will be occurring on <insert date here>, which is when TSSU plans to picket <insert campus name here>.

I will not be crossing the picket line because I am in solidarity with TSSU members in their reasonable and achievable demands for a cost of living adjustment, living wages and better development and pensions protections. However, SFU sent an email (dated 20 June 2023) saying that it is the responsibility of students to seek their own academic concessions directly from Instructors. I would like to ask if you could grant <insert specific academic concession, eg: waiving class participation> to all students in <class>. If this is possible, would it also be possible for you to notify all students via email fo this concession, as many students want to respect the picket lines but are unsure of whether they will be penalised.

Thank you.

Warmly,
